Using God for political purposes. That has been my complaint about the GOP for years. The DNC doing it makes no difference.

My apologies. I misunderstood what you meant.

Good Day,

John MacAuthur writes to Gavin:

John MacArthur Condemns California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s Abortion Billboard Campaign in Open Letter

SNIP..."
The 83-year-old pastor also called Newsom out for misquoting Mark 12:31 and attempting to use it to endorse abortion. MacArthur further pointed out the importance of Mark 12:30, the verse that comes just before the one on the billboards. The verse reads, "You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength."

Both verses are considered the Greatest Commandments in all of the Bible.

You cannot love God as He commands while aiding in the murder of His image-bearers,"

Edited to add: Sermon from Oct 2 addressing the issue before the Church "Calling Rulers To Repentance".

in Him

Bill

Gavin Newsom has put up billboards in anti-abortion states.

One of them boasts bible scripture... out of context..

https://thehill.com/homenews/state-...mpaign-touting-abortion-access-in-california/

Newsom’s new billboard campaign features slogans like “Texas doesn’t own your body. You do.” and “Need an abortion? California is ready to help.” One billboard quotes the Bible — typically cited by anti-abortion activists — saying “Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no greater commandment than these.”

Is there any place in the Bible say says "Loving your neighbor means killing babies"???

How mixed up does one have to be as they read the Bible to insert "Loving my neighbor...hmm that must mean it is ok to kill babies"??

I don't see the relevance of the quoted portion to any aspect of the abortion debate.

Is it your view that Newsome was just having a senior moment and had no clue as to what his billboard had to do with the topic of abortion or why the Bible statement he quoted might in some way suit his form of eisegesis of it???

Most Christians who quote the Bible do so to suit their own purposes or argument. Newsome is only following the example we set.

How so? Give us an example.

From this thread:

Two points:

It's not uncommon knowledge that conservative Christians consider the unborn as human beings, so the command to "Love they neighbor as thyself" is extended to them as well. Gavin Newsom used that Bible verse in conjunction with abortion, which is to exterminate said human life. I'm sure I don't need to explain the contradictory nature of this any further. I think @BobRyan has asked a legitimate question here. I assume you believe in the human soul and would ask you at what point do we humans receive it?

Since when did it become a bad thing to use the Bible to back up an argument you are trying to make?

He did it to Mock Christianity ....He didn't do it to suit a purpose in justifying abortion. Satan uses the Bible to mock Christianity as well ....It's past time to stop defending the evil that the Democrat Party has become.

It's past time to stop defending the evil that we do in the Church.

It's past the time for Christians to stop defending that which has nothing to do with religion.

Sitting in a church pew occasionally does not qualify as religion or Christianity.

There are far too many politicians that use Christianity as a crutch and nothing more.

Exactly what evil are you referring to?

If you are practicing what you perceive to be evil in the church you attend .....It's past time to go to another church.

Or, get on the board and get the church back to the bible.

Demons prowl the hallways of each and every church.....They reside in the Board as well. Agendas, not Biblically driven cause great strife, while pretending to be the "perfect Chrisitan family." I always enjoyed that vision. Mom, Dad, two kid, proudly carrying their Bible to church ....When arriving home after services .....the book serves as a door stop and never is touched except for the next trip to Church .....

The more times I look at this statement... The more it irks me.

Yes... most Christians do quote the Bible to suit their own purposes or argument.. That is what the bible is for:

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (ESV)

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

Notice, however, that this scripture ends with the very important point...."For every GOOD work"

So, yes, we do.. and we should "quote the Bible do to suit our own purposes or argument" If it is for "GOOD work".

We definitely should and should do so without shame or embarrassment. The Bible is the word of God and will endure forever.

Christians that quote scripture and take it out of context or skew the meaning, as a means of getting their way or for some other self serving agenda..are not doing it "For GOOD work" and are easily vetted by other Christians.

Galatians 6:7

King James Version

7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

Newsome is, in no way using the biblical scripture "For GOOD works". He is mocking God and God's word.

I will not be ashamed of "quoting the Bible to suit my own purposes or argument" when I am doing so for "good work".

That.... is why this statement irks me.
