  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Poor Ellie is miserable with gas! It has just started in the last few days and seemed better yesterday but is back this morning. Here's my question if anyone can help...if she can actually pass gas will the mylacon drops help? Sometimes she is really straining and nothing is happening and other times she passes it just fine and doesn't seem bothered.

I guess I need to check with her dr. to see if we need to change her formula. She has been exclusively on formula for 2 1/2 weeks now.

Does anyone have any suggestions to make her more comfortable?

My son is almost 8 weeks old right now and had horrible gas problems (he would scream about an hour after every bottle, it broke my heart!).
We started on gas drops (we used something similar, called little tummys) and those helped. We also ended up having to switch his formula to a gentle one and he is doing MUCH better now (I am pretty sure it was a combination of both though, not just one!)
He could pass gas (but you could tell it was painful) but had a hard time burping.
I hope that helps some! :)

Not to start a debate er anythin, but have either one of you access to some breast milk? A sudden change from breast to formula is gonna cause havoc on their tummies, so if you can suppliment it a bit that'll help. If you cain't, bunches of baths, horses git this way alot to an the only way to keep em from killin emsef's is to run em through water. Stick em in the tub wit ya an have their mid section submerged an even if they poo in the tub jes know it's helpin them out hehe

Gittin the gravity off their guts will help em to move bout more easily an until their bodies either become accostum to the change er ya haveta try a different forumal that'll help em.

We had a really hard delivery and the 3-4 medications I had to take did not agree with my son's tummy (he lost weight, was pale and very fussy - even trying to supplement wasn't good for him). Once I was off the med's (3 weeks later) it was too late.
Its not exactly what we had planned, but when do our plans ever work out the way we wanted ;)

I had irregular heart rhythem during delivery that has continued afterward. Both my ob and cardiologist advised me to stop breastfeeding cold turkey. I would prefer to breastfeed and I am sure it would be better for her but we have to play the cards we are dealt.

We did try warm baths and that helped some to soothe her so she could go to bed but she can't stay in the tub forever!

Here's some old wives remedies for baby gas. Try rubbing their tummy's in a circular motion. The baby will probably find this very soothing and if you add a little pressure it may releave some of the gas. Also you could try, while the baby is laying on its back at play you could take the bottom of their feet in hand and gently push their legs bending at the knee towards their stomach. This often will release some of their gas. Tried both of these options with my son and they both releaved his pressure. Those old wives usually know what they are talking about.

Christian has bad gas. But she seems to be able to pass it well. When she gets fussy though we usually wrap her in a blanket, like they did in the hospital, and hold her tummy against our tummy and rock her, while patting her bum. She seems to calm down when we do that and is able to pass the gas a lot easier. We still haven't used gas drops on her.

How do you burp your baby? Do you only do one position or try many?

With Christian we set her on our knee and pat her back, or lay her across our laps with her face towards the ground and pat her back, you can try those two ways to see if baby burps better after feeding. Christian never would burp over the shoulder.

edited to say: My doctor told me that formula babies tend to have lots of gas.

This is the truth.. We used the drops sometimes too.. but this method almost always worked for our little boy.

My wife and I had the same problem with our little bundle who is going to be 3 soon. He would literally scream from it. We used the mylecon drops and did the little circular motions with his feet and legs and moving them up towards his belly and back again. This was the only thing that helped. He did not have a problem with burping tho, He could let em rip and even surprised his mom and me sometimes. We had tried breast feeding at first, But, When she went back in for heart problems, The meds ruined that idea. She had to go to formula exclusively. We used Carnation Good start and it seemed to work well. Hope that helps some.

Thanks for all of the responses! Ellie is doing much better. We figured out part of the problem...I was mixing enough formula for several bottles at a time in a rubbermaid bottle that had ounces marked on the side. But--the ounces were off by about 4 oz. When I thought I was using 16 ounces of water it was actually 12oz. The result--gas and constipation. Now that we have straightend that out, I have a much happier baby!

Mixing just a tad strong would do it. Matthew seemed to do quite well on a little weaker mix and took 2 oz every 2-3 hours. For some reason if we mixed it per the instructions, He had trouble getting it out of the bottle. We never did figure that out.

I remember the late nite feedings, We shared that duty. ;)

For Emma, the best thing I have found is this: I sit on the side of the bed and lie her across my lap on a blanket with her chest a little higher than her bottom and to where she can press her feet on the bed and let her have a binky (the sucking really can help them work through tummy aches) and just rub her back. The pressure on her abdoment from lying face down and being able to push with her feet both seem to really help, since it's a combination effect. Granted, I've had to sit like this for a while sometimes, but it works. The gas drops have not always relieved her symptoms.
