I just watched garden state and I was blown away by the film, I'm a fan of Zach Braff as JD in scrubs but as a director and writing, well his work just blew me away.

I love everything about Garden state, its an intelligent comedy, thats more about the sureal rather than pure jokes for jokes sake, the characters are real and all in all nothing much happens in this film. Normally a lack of events would be a bad thing but all it does is make the film feel more intamate.

My only critism is, that it was possibly a little too much like his life story but for a first outing directing I'm really impressed.

One of the reviews described Zach Braff as the "woody Allen for this generation" and I hope he lives up to it.

I'm really surprised there haven't been any replies to this!

I really loved Garden State and I try to recommend it to anyone who asks me about it, but I know it's not going to be a movie for everyone.

The only thing I didn't like is that Natalie Portman's character really annoyed me at some points but other than that I thought it was an interesting film.

And the soundtrack is killer, so that's extra points. I think it's the first soundtrack I've bought from a movie since...Space Jam...

She annoyed me as well but the thing is I found that really refreshing, shes a real person not some idealised girl, normally in films the love interests a beuatiful and perfect in almost every single way, i.e a creation of the male gaze but Portmans character isnt. Most writers and directors would of portrayed her as far more of an outsider and possibly it would of been braff saving portman, not the other way around.

I thought it was a great movie as well...I was really surprised!

I actually loved Natalie Portman's character just because she was so not what movies usually portray as the main female role. She had quirks...real quirks...and she was cute. I was surprised at the depth of what the movie was saying and there were a few lines I wanted to just write down and keep forever.

The major thing that bothered me about the film was the language. I'm usually ok with language, but this made me blush a little...so I wouldn't recommend it to all. Overall, it was a crazy good movie, and my sister loves the soundtrack too. :)

this was anything but a smart, interesting film..the first 30 mins was worth watching with the psychiatric visit and the funeral cracked me up but I switched it off after the pet cemetary part at Portmans home. Really a stupid film with a lame male actor lead.Sorry.Enjoy it though!

I am blown away by this thread.

I rented the movie from clean films and I thought it was easily one of the worst movies I have ever seen. I could only take about the first hour, and had to turn it off.

Maybe i'm just no "hip" enough
to get it

Its deffinetly not for everyone but its also aimed at people in a certain stage in life. The films about discovering who you really are and its aimed at late teens and early 20's when you should be figureing out who you want to be and what you want to do with the rest of your life.

wow, how could you hate this movie??

I saw it after a friend pretty much begged me to watch it, because she is obsessed with it, and it was alot better than I thought it would be. No, it isn't action packed, but it is a thought provoking movie. A movie about life and sometimes you just have to step back and really think about what your doing. I love this movie now and glad I own it.

Ok, I really like this movie. It's what I call an "Actor's movie." The character development was great, the relationships are established very clearly, the writing/dialogue wasn't contrived and/or unrealistic, and the acting was wonderful. Yes, there is a lot of language, and a couple of not-so-savory scenes, but overall this is a great film.

I didn't know Zach Braff wrote and directed the film until the last credits, and when I saw that, I was truly impressed.

Just my $.02
