Gap Theory

Can someone explain Gap Theory. I know that it uses

Jeremiah 4
23 I beheld the earth, and, lo, it was without form, and void; and the heavens, and they had no light.
24 I beheld the mountains, and, lo, they trembled, and all the hills moved lightly.
25 I beheld, and, lo, there was no man, and all the birds of the heavens were fled.
26 I beheld, and, lo, the fruitful place was a wilderness, and all the cities thereof were broken down at the presence of the LORD, and by his fierce anger.
27 For thus hath the LORD said, The whole land shall be desolate; yet will I not make a full end.
28 For this shall the earth mourn, and the heavens above be black; because I have spoken it, I have purposed it, and will not repent, neither will I turn back from it.

Scofield stated:

1:2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

without form and void

Jeremiah 4:23-27; Isaiah 24:1; 45:18 clearly indicate that the earth had undergone a cataclysmic change as the result of divine judgment. The face of the earth bears everywhere the marks of such a catastrophe. There are not wanting imitations which connect it with a previous testing and fall of angels. See Ezekiel 28:12-15; Isaiah 14:9-14 which certainly go beyond the kings of Tyre and Babylon.

The gap theory says that between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2 there was a gap of billions of years. During this gap, Lucifer ruled the earth (some say over angels, some say a pre-adamic race) at any rate, lucifer rebelled and God destroyed the earth and re-created it in 6 literal 24 hour days. The gap theorist will stick dinos, cavemen, grand canyon, etc into the "gap". The gap theory is very popular among Pentecostals mainly due to the Dake's Annotated Reference Bible.
