  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi All,

Anyone out there a fan of gaming / tinkering with PC's?

Im a bit of a gamer, PS3 mainly. A good game like Skyrim or the Uncharted series is a bit like being in a book and controlling the character. (I also have a large library so I do read as well).

Im about to try my hand at building a PC for the first time later in the year, I think it will be fun, something a little more challenging then just buying a new one!

Perhaps share your PC build, I would be keen to take a look!

No worries, I actually posted this one here until I found where the tech / gaming threads were. Anyhoo, it possibly refers to a 32 bit video card. But the main thing to look at are the requirements of the game and the specs of your machine (if you have onboard graphics or what expansions you have for video cards)

so.... details to know that would be handy are:

What is the game you are trying to run?
Your system specs? (ie. video card, processor, operating system etc)

If you let me know those I can give you a better idea... also lastly, yo usay the disks are not working, do you mean they are not installing? or they are not readable by the drive? If they are not readable then you probably have an issue with the disk. :o

Anyhoo, let me know and ill try my best to help! ;)

Hi there,

I've been trying to build me a computer for now and hopefully the specs will go like this:
- AMD Phenom II X6 Hexcore
- ATi Radeon HD 58xx Crossfire
- 16GB RAM DDR3 1600MHz
- 150GB WD Raptor
- 1TB WD Caviar Blue
- 2TB WD Caviar Green
- 1TB WD Caviar Black
- Other stuff

I know it's old, cause I've been trying to build something like this for the past two years or so and if I upgrade this list it'll be rather costly which means that this list will be a lot more affordable.

Apart from remembering to keep yourself earthed, so that any electro static charges run to earth, instead of puncturing microscopically thin layers of insulation inside microchips, there is nothing much to building a PC - just bolting together a few components, and making sure you use memory chips compatible with those specified by the motherboard manufacturer.

Totally different system than ours, hon.

I grew up a gamer. Except the only two systems we ever owned were the Nintendo 64 and the Nintendo gamecube, and, believe it or not, we still own those two systems.

And we bought and stored up a supply of games to play on those two systems.

I have a memory, its over 10 years old. My sisters and I were waiting outside in the rain back in 1997 at our local mall so it would open up just so we could purchase a copy of Diddy Kong Racing for the Nintendo 64. We waited for a long time, and got pretty soaked in the rain. Memories like that make me smile. :)

I've been working on a pc game that's kinda like animal crossings/pok'emon kinda game. I'm still trying to master the software that I'm using to make it though, so it's probably gonna be a while before I'm done. I'm no expert on pcs I just know basics using software like multimedia fusion, none of that computer language coding complicated stuff.

I've built my fair share of Desktops. Totally worth it because you save money and future proof your system if you get the right parts.

Did somebody teach you, or did you learn by doing it yourself?

No one taught me how to use a computer, it was something I taught myself how to do over time. My Alma matter wasn't even responsible for the acquired skill.

However, I have no idea how to build a computer. My local college offers some classes on how to build computers, I'm just not interested in taking any of those.

Building your own computer soon looses its mystique, when you realise that it is just a matter of plugging together a few components which were designed to work together, and being careful not to fry everything with static electricity.

The only thing which isn't absolutely straightforward is remembering to follow the motherboard manufacturer's recommendations, regarding processor and memory modules, and even that isn't exactly difficult.
