I am sick of playing games where characters use the Lord's name in vain. Even more so, games where you are not given an option to turn the language off. Profanity is not bad, as playing a game with a general or someone throwing profanity around does not make me want to go around and use profanity all the time. Although, I downloaded the World in Conflict demo last night and in a 2 pr 3minute intro video to the first level I heard G.d. at least 2 times.

What do you think about games that do this? Gears of War had an option to turn off language, but if you turned language off you could not see any blood. I do not even think in Gears that anyone ever said G.d. It angers me when a game comes out and either a cutscene a character is spouting off G.d. or it is a regular action sensitive saying e.g. in Brothers in Arms when you give squad commands to move or fire at a position about 1 out of 5 or 6 times he will yell something that has G.d. in it.

You know, I could just simply ignore it and/or dismiss it or I could choose not to play these games. The fact that the games do this angers me as I would rather not hear it. I feel compelled to not play games that have no option to not hear this.

What are your thoughts?

Well, seeing how you find the word "god" being used in "vain" in a game more troublesome than blood and gore in it, I don't know how to approach your problem...

Since video games are free from religious rules and regulations, they are free to say any name in vain they please.

Depends on how it's used. If it's just spouted off gratuitously all the time just to be vulgar, I'd probably pass on the game...but then, it would probably have other objectionable stuff in it, too. Sometimes it fits the context, though. I played a FPS about Omaha Beach one time and it was in there occaisionally. It fit the context. Heck...if I'd been on Omaha Beach, I probably would have slipped a few times myself! (Cussing is one of my constant struggles.)

Language is one of the things I can't stand. It ranks right up there with sexuality/nudity and graphic gore (though the last not so much. It's funny how when I posted my review of Bioshock*, people actually argued about the language content because they tune it out. Me, I focus on everything, the audio, the visual, the environment, I get myself stuck in the game world to get the full experience. So it irks me when people fling the name of our Lord, our Christ, and our God around (and a few other choice profanities). I even wrote to the makers of Prey to leave the content out or the Hardcore Christian Gamer Association** would never purchase another game from them. My $0.02

I totaly agree, i have bought a nuber of games for $0 or $50 just to play them for a few min or an hour then uninstall them. The game play was great, but the language was bad. At least nowdays i have the option of selling them on ebay.

Like with world in conflict, that is a game i have been looking forward to. I didnt even think to look at the rating. Its an rts.. it should be clean. Btw i dont even know what the rating is. If the language is just in cut scenes, i can just turn the volume down through those, as long as there isnt any in the gameplay its self.

Lol i have been struggling to get through rainbow six vegas without sound. I picked it up for $7 the other day and heard that it was a great game. I knew it was rated m, but again i under estimated it and there is vulger language every few seconds in that game.

So i guess i can still look forward to the new guild wars (as i leave all chat off), and hopefuly crysis. Im worried about far cry 2 as the xbox version had swearing in it.

I mean, wouldnt it be fairly simple to make an option to just remove the language.
Hmmm.. i guess i could try to put a guardian angle in line to my speakers, but they dont remove the language, they only output a different word Like the F word comes out as wow.

You know, its one thing to want to be able to turn off blood & gore, or even block swearing so your kids can play, but this seems to be grown men complaining about this for themselves.

Get over yourselves. If you can't handle mature content in games rated as such then you only have yourself to blame if you buy and play such a game.

Yes it is a big pain in the rear to have to go back and edit or censor dialog to make a clean version. Technologically hard, no, but definitely time consuming and thus costs money which is generally better used else where. War games i particular, you need to get over. Theres a reason we have expression like 'Talks like a sailor" in reference to swearing. Soldiers swear.

Anyone who has no problem playing a video game in which you kill people(gore or not), yet gets bent out of shape if someone cusses(including blasphemy), has their priorities seriously out of whack.

Well... there is a big difference. All boys like to play war/army (well most).

But that doesnt mean that we like to kill in a gross disturbing way, or swear while doing it.There is nothing wrong with being a soldier fighting for your country (or in this case pretending to). You go out and stop/kill the terrorists from killing your fellow soldier, or even some town in your own country. or as in some games, just trying to survive.

Exactly. I do not play games like GTA, because I see them as not war but an needless violence. Ok, fine. In a war game people cussing is expected. Let us see. I am an American soldier on D-Day. I am "cussing like a sailor" because it is not a fun place to be and I could die at any moment.

Ok, so if I could die at any moment (we can die at any moment anyway, regardless of being in a war) that obviously gives me the right to blaspheme God, right? WRONG. Under no circumstance is there a reason why it should be accepted to blaspheme God, just like under no circumstance are we supposed to sin at all. Writing off a virtual soldier in a game blaspheming the name of God because that is what they did does not just make that right?

I think not. Simply writing off things like this because it is what people would do or would have done in the certain situations is not a good idea. Surrounding yourselves with sinful thoughts are a certain way to be led to sin. If you hear someone blaspheming the name of the Lord almost constantly, you are being exposed to sin, and it will make it harder for you to not sin.

That is why from now on I think I will refrain from playing games that use the Lord's name in vain, even if the games in themselves are fun (think Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway. I REALLY wanted to play that.) However, I rarely play games that include magic. Mainly because I do not like them. However, when I played Oblivion, I did not feel compelled to go out and try to cast spells or go around hacking people with my broadsword. Is there a parallel here with language? Is hearing vulgar language going to make you more likely to use it? Well, in my case I do not think that it does, however, I find blaspheming the name of God pretty offensive and would just rather not hear it. Profanity in itself does not bother me, but I do not use it because society sees the use of it as bad.

I beg to differ. Pretty obvious answer here. Check out Exodus 20:7. "You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.
That seems to disagree with your statement. I could just pick out any law and say it does not apply. Do not kill. (means do not murder) Ok, well I do not think that is that big of a deal so I can go killing people whenever I feel like it. Or say I see somebody murdering someone else? Should I just write it off and say it is ok? NO.

In regard to an earlier post in this thread.. there is hardware and/or software that acts as a filter for language? Please tell. I have seen things like "TVGuardian" but that seems to require a TVG enabled DVD player and as far as I know says nothing about using the product for cable television or videogames.

Just because they can put it in doesn't mean they should, not does it mean we wanna hear it. For full marketing, we should be able to dictate how much is let it either by influencing the developers on how much is inserted or through setting we ourselves set.

If you do not wish to hear something, you don't have to. If you have a problem with swearing, use the speaker profanity filters as described by another poster
if there is no option to turn it off or if turning it off would ruin gameplay. If all else fails, you can choose not to play the game. I wouldn't play a game that had content that was against my beliefs either.

I'm a reviewer, so I play the games with questionable content to give others a heads up on the content. And then there's the fact that my aversion language and gore and whatnot is preferential.

Even if a game doesnt use the lords name in vain, I just replace one of the sound clips with sombody using the lords name in vain, usually tourettes guy. He makes the best sound packs for anything.

The trouble is that i can never actually play a serious round when i do that, especially in sauerbraten when i have tourettes guy shouting and the sesame street theme music playing .
