The Sanhedrin arrested the apostles again. Peter et al were defiant in Acts 5:
Saul was his student (Acts 22:3) before his conversion. He prosecuted the believers with zeal (Acts 22:5) and witnessed the stoning of Stephen (Acts 22:20). He was hostile toward the early believers. Apparently, he did not learn cool-headed leniency from Gamliel.
33 When they heard this, they were enraged and wanted to kill them. 34 But a Pharisee in the council named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law held in honor by all the people, stood up and gave orders to put the men outside for a little while.
Gamaliel, a cooler head, prevailed and they let the apostles go. He is mentioned outside the Bible, WikiIn the Talmud, Gamaliel is described as bearing the titles Nasi (Hebrew: נָשִׂיא Nāśīʾ) "prince" and Rabban "our master", as the president of the Great Sanhedrin in Jerusalem; although some dispute this, it is not doubted that he held a senior position in the highest court in Jerusalem.[2] Gamaliel holds a reputation in the Mishnah for being one of the greatest teachers in all the annals of Judaism: "Since Rabban Gamaliel the Elder died, there has been no more reverence for the law, and purity and piety died out at the same time".[7]
