  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

oh I am not saying that any alterations would not require a radical system redesign. everything is pretty much plugged together now. If however one was designing a lifeform from scratch, odds are one could do it better.
You may be correct!:) But we're not working from scratch.

well as I mentioned in the previous post, the vagus nerve (is it, or the laryngeal nerve, I can't remember now) is a corker, and the way testicles are plumbed in leaves something to be desired too, and also the vertebral discs.
Yes, I wonder about this too. The recurrent laryngeal nerve has a bizarre course which causes all sorts of trouble in head-and-neck surgery! Heck, perhaps God never wanted us to remove thyroids afterall...

what is your opinion on it all though ID or evolution?
Both. Is that allowed?:p

oh I forgot about nerves, isn't theer one that goes from the head, under the arteried in the heart, and then back up to the larynx again, even in giraffes? and that reminds me of testicular plumbing, which seems to be proof in one piece of piping that either God is having a laugh, or ID is false.

Yes that is true. Guraffes though have some intersting mechanisms. So they do not pass out when the bed over for a drink there is a valve that closes off the blood flow to the brain and another device that drips blood to it so it can stii get some nutrients. Not sure of the names of giraffe parts. I studied this briedfly in my Pre-Med days. You bring up some interesting points! More later-going into lecture now. My first day back since my surgery. Talk to you later :)

Also I think cardiac tissue and neural tissue could use a better regenerative process because as of now if either of these tissue types like hyaline cart. gets damaged there is not much that can be done since neural and cardiace tissue differentiated and specialized-regen would have been a nice feature however!! :)
I think there is a valid reason why these tissues do not regenerate in an unlimited fashion.

no, evolution does it ;) I am just argueing against the "designed from scratch' point of view.

or parathyroids, my mum is having a bit of trouble with her voice after getting them removed :(
Both. Is that allowed?:p
would that be evolution "prodded along" to get sentience? well you can have that, but not ID as in humans were designed to be just as they are now.

I've seen you play 'Devil's Advocate' before :)

Crikey - I'm sorry about that. :(
Complications of surgery... aaagh! We need to keep in mind benefit / risk, but I sometimes wonder whether we should be meddling at all.

You're tough on me today... well, like the rest of the world, I don't have the answer. There is enough evidence to support all sorts of evolutionary happenings. I'm also a Christian.

How do I tie these together.. Not as 'evolution prodded along.' I'll give it some thought... but suffice to say that I believe in both God and evolution. I'm not sure where intelligent design fits in. I bought a paperback by Werner Gitt a while back 'Did God use Evolution?' I have yet to read it :)

well theistic evolution is the easiest position to defend around here!

well it's okay, it is after effects of a kidney transplant, which basically saved her life, so added together the net effect is good.

well I like to get people thinking :)

well I don't se Evolution being a contradiction to God at all really. If God (exists and...) designed anything, I think he designed the rules to allow for life and sentience. he did a pretty good job of it too.

Ahem... turns out I've been fibbing a little...

:sorry: apologies all round!:sorry:

We don't actually need our oesophagus and trachea connected in order to suck. But it helps. So I guess that's my argument thrown out the window!

I asked my Consultant when I came into work this evening, who (incidentally) thought I was bananas...:p

I think ID would suit humans with awesome chrome, minerally grown, plate armor. We would be communicating with radio waves as well as speech. We'd have incredible speed, strength, and size. Laser firing eyes, and fire breathing lungs. We'd be immortal and incapable of harm or disease. We'd have all the minerals we'd need because we'd be incredibly efficient and nearly flawless in energy use.

But we must remember that this is like a future "hope" for our species in evolution. We just aren't there yet. And one species will attain this power if life lives much much longer. So we are still enduring what seem to be flaws. We are intelligently designed to become better.

If the windpipe and the foodpipe had separate openings, I think there would be more regular, and more serious accidents than are caused by choking.

If my nose is blocked, I breathe through my mouth. But if I had a tracheostomy, and that became blocked, I'd die within minutes.

Goodness gracious, neither situation is ideal, is it?!

The only alternative I can imagine would be a diffuse surface area on our bodies which can perform gas exchange. This way it can't get blocked easily.
