  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Fundamentalism Makes Me Cry

Sometimes I read the writings of Fundamentalist David Cloud on his Way of Life website out of pure curiosity and every time I do, I feel like I need to douse myself with gasoline and jump into a fireplace for it. This guy makes me embarrassed beyond recognition sometimes to even bear the the Baptist title. I mean I know I am where God has me to be, but good heavens sakes this guy is so far into legalism and Phariseeism that I feel sorry for my Catholic brothers and sisters that they get the treatment they do from these goons. Kirk, Wols, KC (a fellow NFL junkie!), and others I hope you won't ever lump me together with the fundamentalists. I love each and every one of you as Christ would love everyone. Pray that those who delve into fundy sin would find their way out!

I dont even know too much about ecumenism anyways.

I agree us So Baptists have the few way over the line types, but I guess I call myself just a Christian who goes to an SBC church. I'm not your typical "yell at ya about fire and brimstone. billy joe backwoods (a wolseley term hehe) preachers which alot of rural baptist ministers are irk me as well. sometimes i wanna put a bag over my head. oh well. *sigh* I know we will all be in heaven someday.

I am currently reading "Fundamentalism and Catholicism" by Karl Keating. He is basically addressing the Fundamentalists issues regarding the Catholic faith. I'm just starting into it, but it seems very informative.

Actually, if we had more Prince Jeff's around, life for the Catholics would be easier. Although I must say...the majority of Protestants I know are like Jeff. I run more into the more challenging ones on the web more than any place else.

Jeff, we love you too and are glad you are a part of our community. God bless you both.

KC,

I have my very own copy of "Fundamentalism and Catholicism" by Karl Keating. I think it is very well written, very informative. I've seen some reviews that say Mr Keating goes overboard, but I didn't see that. Scott Hahn's book, "Rome Sweet Home" is another goodie.

I feel that if people would study church HISTORY and understand how Martin Luther made the initial break from the Catholic Church, and then see how that enabled others to create their own interpretations of the Bible, they would be more understanding of Catholicism, instead of spouting typical "Wh-o-r-e of Babylon" rhetoric.

Peace be with you,
~VOW

"Rome Sweet Home" is responsible for my conversion. I loved it.

As a history major, my favorite period is the Early Modern period of European history - right at the crux of the Renaissance, Reformation, & Counter-Reformation. I loved learning the history of the split. It just happened to coincide with my conversion as well, so that was particularly interesting for me. I can't wait to go back to school and take more history courses!

Well....! :)

My degree is in History----Phi Alpha Theta in fact. :)

My particular forte is Modern History (from about 1865 on up), with a sub-forte in World War II and the Cold War, and a sub-sub-forte in the Third Reich.

Since I began studying the Church Fathers many, many years ago, however, I've also learned a great deal about that aspect of ecclesiastical history.

I wish I had the time to make an in-depth study of the cultural history of the Medieval Period. All I can do is hitch-read, which doesn't satisfy me; but I suppose it'll have to do until the kids are grown up. :)

Blessings,
---Wols.

Ah, Wols, I am a fellow PAT. Not saying much as I only joined 3 weeks before I graduated... Wish it would've been much more active & gotten us involved earlier.

I think the whole Medieval period is interesting, but really enjoy what happens next. Not too big on Modern, don't know why. I did take an excellent Vietnam class, and also enjoy the Cold War a little bit. Also really like Colonial/Revolutionary America, but not as well as late medieval/early Early Modern. Although I work outside the home, my only contact with history is reading about it in monographs, and haven't done that in a while. I think I may have to dig out one of my favorites "Domenico Scandella, also known as Mennochio". It is very interesting - about a lay person during the Inquisition. He was nuts; his cosmology was way whacked out and everything, but the case is fascinating. Hopefully someday soon I can return to school and get an MA in history.

*sigh* Wols, now I have to decide whether to re-read "Rome Sweet Home", Mennochio's case, or finish reading "Catholicism versus Fundamentalism". *sigh* Oh well, they'll all get read!

*studiously takes notes*

Thanks Wols! I'll definitely have to check that one out!

BTW, have you read "Sicola, the Papal Bull"? It is an older work of fiction, but very excellent. Not too much on historical fact, really, but a great read! I think it was written in the '70s, and I can't remember the author.

Peace,
Amy
