The Ten Commandments define righteousness and godly love at its basic level. Every sin and crime committed in the world has its root in God's Law.
Romans 7:12 So hear me out: the law is holy; and its commandments are holy, right, and good.
A religious person who has not been born of God can look just like a child of God. Both are living according to the will of God but both are not motivated by the same source.
The religious person really has no assurance of his/her standing with God because their relationship with Him is based on behavior. Their assurance comes from how well they obey. The child of God has assurance in their relationship with God because of their position as a born again child of God and not on their behavior.
Behavior will have a part in the child of God but it will be the fruit of his/her position as a family member. Their behavior is not a means to become a family member, it's the fruit of it.
Luke 6:43 For a good tree does not bear bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit.
The apple tree produces apples not by will, but rather, by DNA nature. The DNA nature of the apple tree comes from it's seed, not its will. Our new nature comes from a seed as well.
1 John 3:9 Everyone who has been fathered by God does not practice sin, because God’s seed resides in him, and thus he is not able to sin, because he has been fathered by God.
God is righteous and His Law is righteous so the one who is born of God takes on His nature and this will result in a life that practices righteousness.
1 John 2:29 If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone who practices righteousness is born of Him.
