  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Mark Twain wrote a work entitled Eve's Diary and " it forms part of Twain's so-called Adamic Diaries, along with the works That Day In Eden, Eve Speaks, Adam's Soliloquy, and the Autobiograhy of Eve."

"It is believed that Mark Twain wrote this book as a love letter to his wife, Livy, who died in June 1904; in a telling admission, Twain said: 'Eve's Diary is finished — I've been waiting for her to speak, but she doesn't say anything more.' "

What there is lacking in actual dedication to Christian faith, Twain's amazing insight into the human mind and heart, especially of Eve as well as Adam, is a kind of ode to the human relationship between the man and the woman.

That Twain could so enter into Eve's thoughts that are so feminine strikes me as a kind of intuitive genius.

But I want to share some quotes because they impressed me with the ideal of an eternal need between the masculine and the feminine psyches.

I truly believe that it is very good literature.

MONDAY.--This morning I told him my name, hoping it would interest him. But he did not care for it. It is strange. If he should tell me his name, I would care. I think it would be pleasanter in my ears than any other sound.

No, he took no interest in my name. I tried to hide my disappointment, but I suppose I did not succeed. I went away and sat on the moss-bank with my feet in the water. It is where I go when I hunger for companionship, some one to look at, some one to talk to.

It is not enough--that lovely white body painted there in the pool--but it is something, and something is better than utter loneliness. It talks when I talk; it is sad when I am sad; it comforts me with its sympathy; it says, "Do not be downhearted, you poor friendless girl; I will be your friend." It IS a good friend to me, and my only one; it is my sister.

Tuesday--Wednesday--Thursday--and today: all without seeing him. It is a long time to be alone; still, it is better to be alone than unwelcome.

At first I couldn't make out what I was made for, but now I think it was to search out the secrets of this wonderful world and be happy and thank the Giver of it all for devising it.

By watching, I know that the stars are not going to last. I have seen some of the best ones melt and run down the sky. Since one can melt, they can all melt; since they can all melt, they can all melt the same night.

That sorrow will come--I know it. I mean to sit up every night and look at them as long as I can keep awake; and I will impress those sparkling fields on my memory, so that by and by when they are taken away I can by my fancy restore those lovely myriads to the black sky and make them sparkle again, and double them by the blur of my tears.

Forty Years Later:
It is my prayer, it is my longing, that we may pass from this life together--a longing which shall never perish from the earth, but shall have place in the heart of every wife that loves, until the end of time; and it shall be called by my name.

But if one of us must go first, it is my prayer that it shall be I; for he is strong, I am weak, I am not so necessary to him as he is to me --life without him would not be life; how could I endure it?

This prayer is also immortal, and will not cease from being offered up while my race continues. I am the first wife; and in the last wife I shall be repeated.

We were introduced to these via the claymation movie "The Adventures of Mark Twain". It's one of those gems that you seldom find... but if you can get it from your video store or Netflix, I suggest you do. It gives an overview of some of Twain's best stories, both the light-hearted (The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County) and the rather dark (The Mysterious Stranger).

It includes a great deal from the Adamic diaries. Very touching and poignantly done. (though Adam is rather silly in it)

I recommend it highly. It's a fun movie.
