  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I am new to the forum and do not know exactly what has been discussed, but have been interested in MR. Hovinds "debates" due to some YEC showings of his videos at my university. Two things have sprung to my mind.
1. A christian roommate of the presentation leader has become disillusioned with his YEC roommates and has told me how much he finds Hovind to be out of line and out of truth. Oh, and this fellow is a cell biology major. and Christian. Also a kind of fella one can respect. he likes a good discussion.

2. M.r Hovind simplifies evolution as coming from a rock, and he does't beleive that he has any connection to a rock. That in mind, I challenge him to live from this time forward without any of the following things in his body or his diet: Boron, Calcium, Chromium, Copper, Iodine, Magnesium, Manganese, molybendium, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, Silica, Vanadium, sodium, Iron and any other trace minerals you can think of.
tell me what you think -

Interesting,
But I challenge Hovind to actually open up and read his bible.

In it, he will find that Adam was made from dirt (or mud), which of couse, comes from rocks, and may even include some tiny rocks.

:)

(we will ignore the fact that Rock to croc (as he sometimes puts it) is not the theory of evolution and thus a nice strawman, but hovind loves those.)

There is a difference between 'rocks' and minerals. I'm not sure what you are going for here. Several of these are metals (do you consider them to be 'rocks'?) . You have basically listed solid elements, not 'rocks'.

Are not rocks composed of minerals? a child writes on a sidewalk with a rock she found. It is comprised of calcium carbonate. It is natural chalk. Some antacids are comprised of calcium carbonate. the3y tout the ability to give you a good source of calcium. People who live in an Iron range get iron through drinking water. The same iron is pulled out in rocks (ore)to be purified. Rock salt anyone? I'll check geology, but I do beleive that all the above minerals may be found in rocks...Gold and silver are elements, but we don't seem to use them.

Yeah, a lot of us are disillusioned with YECs. :)

Who are you asking to explain more?
And what?

Ask me and Ill be glad to go on more with my explanation...

MR. Hovind tells in his video of going to an oral debate against some bio/chem (or biochem or biological chemistry or whatever subdiv you want) profs. He askes if they truly believe that they come from a rock. One said "no, she came from the Primordial soup" he asked what that was and laughed at her because she said that rain came down and washed the minerals off rocks into the P(sic) soup.

Minerals comprise rocks. and us. Aren't we just minerals If I had a dollar for every time I heard "Then calcuim rushes in..." I would be able to pay off my student loans:)

Agreed, Hovind is a FRAUD!! He know neither Chrisitanity or science. He tries to make a dollar off of those Chrisitans who are ignorant of science. It makes me sick how you mentioned Hovind laughed at the prof. who said we came from Primor. Soup. It seems like he "laughs" when he is at the short end of an argument in a futile attempt to shift the spotlight off of his ignorance and make the person appear foolish- to lay people in his audience, ignorant of science in the first place.

Yeah, I think Hovid has analized his audiance very well - they tend to appeal to more superficial aspects, rather then who's actually right or wrong.

Oh, and I want to clarify: A student group is showing MR. Hovinds videos. I am a Biomed student who has been going to see the circus and try to tell these yec kids what a liar MR.H is . Another bio student has been in my classes (Virology, MIcro, Etc) and his roomates have been showing these videos. He and I have been discussing them.
I go because I can't stand the videos. I can make it 45-60 minutes before I have to leave in disgust.I try to answer H's questions and the YEC's get mad at me and stop listening to reason.

I suggest what you do then, is just forget arguing about his usual strawmen such as bananas evolving into mice, and cats giving birth to dogs, because really avid hovind worshippers won't admit that his strawmen are strawmen, and just go for the really blatant mistruths. In that I mean things like my signature line, quotes taken out of context, his comments on dating, his strawmen based on lies (another example coming up) and so on. These are much harder to deny, and then you get to watch them really go on the defensive, or admit that hovind is actually a bit of a prat. I have had a few people question mg signiature, so I tell them where it comes from:

http://www.drdino.com/cse.asp?pg=real_video

download part 4, and it is 2 hours and 8 minutes in according to the time stamp on my player. he even conveniently puts it on a slide so you can read it, just to demonstrate to your brain that your ears aren't imagining things.

in seminar #4 he is talking about bird evoltution from dinosaurs, he shows a little plastic model of what looks like a diplodicus, and asks how that would have evolved wings. he then goes on to suggest that scientists say that birds evolved directly from 4-legged dinosaurs to 2-legged 2-winged birds. (with a picture of some dinosaur with half leg half wings that couldn't even stand up... incidentally no feathers, just skin wings iirc. this one looked like the love child of a T-rex and a pterodactyl - definitely nothing like an archaeoptryx) ... well this one is obviously stupid, because we know that velociraptors were 2 legged, we know that T-rexes were 2-legged, we know that a whole host of dinosaurs (including the ones that eventually evolved into birds, but this is a moot point) were 2 legged, so why does he use such an absurd strawman?
