  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

To Number 81:

First, let me welcome you to Christian Forums!! We're glad you're here!

To answer your question, in my personal opinion, yes, you should avoid such things as chicken stock, and items which would contain chicken stock, like stuffing, cream of broccoli soup, or chicken flavored rice.

However, if you are eating out, and you choose to eat the cream of broccoli soup as a Lenten meal, instead of the beef stew or the broiled lobster, then of course, you haven't violated any great religious law. I recall a homily by a priest during Lent one year where he said that going to Red Lobster and eating King Crab or the shrimp platter is technically following the rules of Lenten meals, you aren't sacrificing SQUAT.

So, look in your heart. Are you using chicken broth as a "technicality" to avoid Lenten sacrifice, or is it in a dish that you have no control over?

Your INTENT is what matters.

Peace be with you,
~VOW

I admit I tend to be somewhat legalistic in these matters myself. For example, when I was younger and actually used to frequent fast food resturants, I'd never order fries with my McFish-whatever during Lent because they deep-fry them in beef fat.

On the other hand, I love seafood, and it's nothing for me to put away quite a meal of it, so I actually have to watch myself on Fridays during Lent, or it ends up being el pigola time instead of sacrifice time.

Like VOW said, it's your intent that matters. :)
