• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

An action is considered free, or voluntary, when it is the result of a decision. But if decisions themselves were voluntary, then every decision would be preceded by an infinite regression of decisions to decide, and so no final decision could ever be made.

You are about to touch on the difference between necessary and contingent.

God is necessary; everything else is contingent.

I think the decision starts the moment that it is necessary to make said decision.
Ok, but for an action to be free, it must be the result of a decision, right? And a decision is an action itself, so for it to be free the decision itself must be the result of a decision, which means if we had free will we would never be able to act, because we would spend all eternity deciding to decide to decide to decide to decide, ad infinitum.

A decision is not an action.

What are your thoughts on this?
Decisions certainly are influenced by outside forces, but I consider "free will" to be present when it is physically possible to choose more than one option.

What makes the act of thinking or deciding free? For an act to be free, it must be the result of a decision, right? Which means that for a decision to be free, it must be the result of a decision, which is the result of a decision, ad infinium.

Some thoughts start as the result of a thought while others as the result of an action. Some decisions are decided based on decisions while others are decided based on actions.
