What is there to say about lemmings, it is the classic game that almost everybody knows. Although multiple modern ports of lemmings have been created, the original IMO Lemmings games is, and always will be, the best.

This download includes the full versions of Lemmings, Oh no More Lemmings!, and 1993 Holiday Lemmings.

Modern mac users should use a classic emulator like Sheep Shaver or run this game on a PPC mac running OSX 10.4 or earlier.

BZFlag

Platform(s): Cross Platform, Windows, Mac
License: LGPL, Open Source

Link: http://bzflag.org/

BZFlag is first person tank shooter. Players drive a tank and pick up upgrades for their tank and weapon sytem. The tank can also jump extremely high to overcome obstacles. It is a very simple game that is multiplayer only. Some players compare BZFlag's game-play to Counter Strike.

Players are usually divided up into teams for gameplay. The level structures are simple and new levels can be easily created. At any one time, about 200 players are online.

You defiantly need to be a certain type of person to enjoy BZFlag. The graphics are just plain horrible and, IMO, the gameplay is extremely boring. IMO, just do yourself a huge favor and buy Counter Strike Source for $20. However, some people obviously enjoy this game.

CellFactor: Revolution

Category: Tech Demo, Physics based first person shooter
Mode(s): Local Multiplayer, but this can be used as single player

Platform(s): Windows
License: Freeware
Status: Active ???
Link: http://www.cellfactorrevolution.com/

CellFactor: Revolution is a rather unique first person shooter developed as a tech demo of AGEIA PhysX. While the player can use normal weapons such as rifles and grenades, the main focus of the game is the player's control over certain physics. Players can interact and manipulate almost any object to be used as a deadly weapon. Tons of items in every level are physics enabled. Sometimes, it is very entertaining to just sit back and play with the impressive physics demonstrated by CellFactor.

Multiplayer games are confined to the local area network, presumably because of the crazy physics load. If you ever do play with a group of other people, the gameplay will become truly hectic. CellFactor is highly entertaining in that there are thousands of "entertaining" ways to eliminate the other players. Of course you can always just run and gun, but it much more fun to try to kill other player's indirectly with debris.

Players without an AGEIA PhysX accelerator will only be to play two out of the five total levels. These levels have decreased levels of physics.

If your computer can handle CellFactor: Revolution, I highly recommend you try this game.

America's Army

Category: Tactical first person shooter
Mode(s): Multiplayer

Platform(s): Windows (V2.8.3.1), Mac and Linux (V2.5)
License: Proprietary License
Status: Active
Link: http://www.americasarmy.com/

America's army is a tactical shooter that is developed by the United States Military. The game focuses more on realism than most other games, and this provides both positives and negatives. Overall, the gameplay is rather like Counter Strike.

America's Army is considered a medium-paced tactical shooter because while players can be easily killed, there are actually few fire fights. Like Counter Strike, America's Army has rounds. Rounds start with each team spawning, and end once one team accomplishes a set objective. Players killed during the round become spectators.

America's Army uses a point system to prevent teamkills and other mischief. Points are rewarded for enemy kills, but even more points are rewarded for healing a teammate. Points are taken away for friendly fire. If your points are too low, you are kicked from the server.

The graphics are passable, but not great. The upcoming release of America's Army 3 should help this some.

The game has raised some controversy over recruitment. A number of people feel that the game unfairly targets teenagers, so they are more likely to be recruited into the armed forces later in life. Also, some critics argue about the level of realism available in America's Army.

War§ow

Category: Competitive First Person Shooter
Mode(s): Single and multiplayer

Platform(s): Mac, Windows, Linux
License: Freeware with GNU GPL code and proprietary multimedia resources
Status: Active
Link: http://www.warsow.net/

War§ow is a cel-shaded first person shooter. In general, War§ow is aimed at competitive gaming . There is heavy emphasis on movement and "trick" jumping in the gameplay, and it is essential to use these skills to defeat other players.

War§ow uses the Qfusion 3d engine, which is a heavily modified version of the quake II GLP engine .

Weapons have both weak and strong ammunition. While the strong ammunition is more difficult to obtain, it gives the user a considerable advantage in gameplay. Some strong ammunition may also modify the behavior of the weapon.

The overall look of War§ow is very clean. The cel-shaded style allows for easy visibility and there are no unnecessary effects. The system requirements are also relatively low.

The gameplay is very fast and may be slightly difficult for first time users to pick up on. The movement system of War§ow is slightly complex, but once a user is able to master it, they will be able to enjoy this game to its fullest.

Category: Life simulation
Mode(s): Singleplayer

Platform(s): Mac, Windows, online flash, (PS3)
License: Proprietary
Status: Flash version not active???
Link: http://intihuatani.usc.edu/cloud/flowing/

Flow is a simple game about the evolution of a small aquatic creature. Players control the creature as they travel deeper and deeper into the ocean to face more and more powerful foes. The graphics of flow are elegantly simple.

To start, a player must eat red organisms to dive deeper into the ocean, blue organisms will allow the player to rise higher in the ocean. Players eat regular organisms to evolve their creature. Some organisms will just make the creature larger, while other will add new shapes or abilities onto the creature. Some large organisms must systematically be destroyed before the player can eat the individual sections.

The ocean planes become darker and darker as the player descends into the depths bellow. The organisms also become more and more complex and a final boss lies at the bottom. Once defeating it, players will return to the surface as a new jellyfish like creature. From here, they must complete the game again.

Because of the creature's evolution, each game of flOw is different. The basic flash game is free, but there is a more complex, graphically and gameplay wise, PS3 versions that players must actually buy. While the PS3 versions is much better, the original flash version still is very fun.

Blob Wars: Metal Blob solid

Category:2d Platform Shooter
Mode(s): Singleplayer

Platform(s): Linux, Mac OS X, Amiga, BeOS, GP2X, PlayStation Portable, Xbox and Dreamcast
License: Freeware, Open Souce
Status: Active
Link: http://www.parallelrealities.co.uk/blobWars.php

Blob wars follows the story of Bob the blob as he fights off the evil alien blob invaders. Bob must rescue his fellow blobs to complete each level.

Bob is able to use a variety of weapons as well as a jetpack to assist his quests. The gameplay is pretty standard for the 2d platform shooter genre. Players must often locate additional items in a level to access new areas. According to parallel realities, there is over 8 hours of gameplay.

The graphics are simple, and the default game features massive explosions of blood, a feature which can turned off very easily. Blob Wars should run on almost any computer, because of its very low system requirements.

XMoto

Category: Platform
Mode(s): Singleplayer

Platform(s): Linux, FreeBSD, Mac OS X, Windows
License: GNU General Public License, Open Souce
Status: Active
Link: http://xmoto.tuxfamily.org/

XMoto is a platformer game in which players control a motorcycle rider. The gameplay is similar to Elasto Mania, but the physics have been drastically altered. There are several different modes of play for XMoto, and a wide variety of unique and challenging levels.

For basic levels, a player must collect an object, typically a strawberry, while avoiding other obstacles. If the player's head touches any wall, the player is instantly killed and must restart that level. Players control the rider's speed and pitch. Once all of these objects are collected, players must find the exit, typically a flower. The goal is to complete a level in the least amount of time possible.

Most levels are simple in design, yet some more complex ones use scripts. New levels are easily created using Inkscape. There are a very large number of custom levels that can be automatically downloaded into the game. New player skins can also be downloaded.

Overall, new users may find XMoto challenging at first, but they will soon get used to the game. Levels range from the simple to the near impossibly. The game is very addicting and there are a decent number of new levels added every week.

In Neverball is much like Super Monkey Ball ,except in Neverball the player actually controls the world instead of controlling the ball directly. Players must collect a certain number of coins, worth a certain value, in order to progress to the next level. Levels get continuously harder. Players must race the clock to complete each level.

Modern editions of Neverball also include a miniature golf game called Neverputt. In this, players must putt the ball into a hole within a certain number of turns to complete each level. New Neverball and Neverputt levels can be easily created using GtkRadiant.

WURM Online

A first person (Currently) medieval themed game that hinges on a player creating EVERYTHING they need and the tools they need to create them. The environment is beautiful and though the game is still currently being worked on, its still a great game.

There is no real economy, as anything you actually NEED in the game you can find and create yourself or trade with other players.

Armagetron Advanced

Category: Tron
Mode(s): Single and multiplayer

Platform(s): Mac, Windows, Linux, others
License: GNU General Public License, Open source
Status: Active

Armagetron Advanced is a self proclaimed "tron 3d clone". The gameplay of Armagetron is much like the original Tron, in that players control light cycles which spawn walls behind them. However Armagetron offers numerous improvements, the most obvious of these being the fully 3d environment.

Although single player is offered, multiplayer is where the game truly shines. Gameplay is highly customizable and offers numerous game modes. Of course there is classic versus mode, but there are also games like CTF and sumo. Almost every gameplay point of the game can be customized online for a unique experience every time.

While it may not be much to look at, Armagetron advanced offers great gameplay and a fun mulitplayer experiance.

Runescape

Category: RPG/Bad
Mode(s): Multiplayer

Platform(s): online

Let me just say it, runescape is a just plain bad game. However, since there are "138,230" players online as I write this, some people must find runescape to be decent.

Runescape is a fantasy RPG set in the middle ages where you can trade, make friends, fight, craft things, and improve various skills. Since the game is totally online, and completely server side, the graphics are poor. The online nature of this game does let almost anyone with a computer play runscape from anywhere in the world.

After completing a long and pointless tutorial, players are sent to a specific world where they can interact with other players. Worlds can contain up to 2000 players at one time. There are two basic account types, free accounts and member accounts. With member accounts, players gain access to more content and playing area, but they also have to pay $5 a month. There are also member only worlds

There is no set objective in runescape, you just do whatever you want whenever you want. Some players spend 6+ hours a day leveling up their characters while other players join just to laugh at the previously mentioned people.

Various Doom Source Ports

Category: Classic FPS

Platform(s): multiple, depends on the project

In 1997, ID tech released the doom source code allowing many developers to create their own port of this extremely popular and revolutionary game. These ports originally intorduced cross platform support, but many have since added modern features such as openGL rendering or dynamic lighting. Doom has since been ported to almost every operating system and these ports have changed almost every aspect of the original game.

A more complete list of all ports is available here.

Blood Frontier

Category:FPS
Mode(s): Single and multiplayer

Platform(s): Windows, Linux (can be easily ported, and more ports will exist in the future)
License: zlib/libpng
Status: Active
Link: http://bloodfrontier.com/Main_Page

Blood Frontier is a total conversion based upon the cube 2, sauerbraten, game engine. While still in alpha stages, the game is very playable and extends upon many of the editing concepts originally presented by sauerbraten. This includes fully integrated editing system that is based upon cubes.

Blood Frontier is set in a future martian habitat. Currently there is little information concerning the single player campaign as it is still under development. As players can compete in a variety of game modes against bots on arena style maps. There is also multiplayer support, but at the game's current stage one may have trouble finding other players to play with.

If you understand svn, it is highly recommended that you obtain the development version of Blood Frontier as the official releases may be out of date.

If you have a copy of UT2004, UTXMP is a free game built off from UT2004.

UTXMP is a total conversion of the older U2XMP (Unreal 2 Expanded Multiplayer). It is a class based game with 3 classes. Each team starts out with 2 artifacts and the object is to capture all 4. You have to hack into and control enough power generators to power all your teams equipment in order to register the artifacts you capture. There are also spawn points you can hack for your team as well as turrets and other cool stuff. This newer version also has enhanced netcode and better anticheats to make it more fun and problem free than the original.

UTXMP is an awesome game with a small yet dedicated community.

You can download the latest version 3.52 (May 2007) from Free Monkey Interactive's website
