Sauerbraten

Category: First person shooter, and separate RPG
Mode(s): Single and Multiplayer

Platform(s): Cross Platform (windows, Mac, Linux, others)
License: Zlib License, Open source
Status: Still in development (CVS available)
Link: http://www.sauerbraten.org/

Sauerbraten is a game based upon the Cube II engine. It is an arena style shooter with fast gameplay. Sauerbraten's main strength is multiplayer, but there are also single player and RPG maps available.

Sauerbraten is unique in that it uses a cube, octree, structure for all of the maps. This allows it to run on very old computers but still look great on modern equipment. It also allows for easy in-game map editing. Co-edit mode allows multiple users to create or edit maps online. No coding skill is required for basic map editing but to create great maps, a basic knowledge of c/c++ is recommended.

With official updates every couple of months, CVS, and plenty of user created content/maps, sauerbraten is constantly evolving and improving itself.

Marathon Trilogy

Category: Classic first person shooter
Mode(s): Single and Multiplayer

Platform(s): Mac Classic, other user ports (Mac OSX users should use SheepShaver or another Classic emulator)
License: Freeware
Status: Abandoned, a small community still creates content
Link: http://trilogyrelease.bungie.org/

Marathon is a science fiction first person shooter originally released for the macintosh in 1994. It has two sequels, Marathon 2: Durandal and Marathon Infinity.

Marathon features a complex and engaging campaign. Marathon is often compared to doom, although marathon features a more complex engine. Marathon was a key point in the evolution of the modern FPS. However, its popularity was limited by the macintosh only release.

Missions are objective oriented and feature puzzles and challenges. Multiplayer is quick and hectic. There are also several tools, some official, to create new levels and content.

N

Category: Platform Game
Mode(s): Single player

Platform(s): Windows, Mac, Linux, (XBLA, DS, and PSP are available as well)
License: Freeware
Status: Version 1.4, continuing development
Link: http://www.thewayoftheninja.org/n.html

"In N, the player controls a ninja who runs and jumps around levels, picks up gold, opens and closes doors through switches, and avoids enemies in an attempt to trigger a switch which opens an exit door, and get to it safely."

"There are 500 official levels in N and many more user created levels. The goal of each level is to trigger the switch and exit through a door it opens before the time-limit is up." Collecting gold will increase the time remaining by 2 seconds.

"N also contains a feature that adds support for custom, user-made levels through a built-in level editor. "

N is a simple yet addictive game, that is fun and can be extremely challenging.

FlightGear

Category: Flight sim
Mode(s): Single and Multiplayer

Platform(s): Windows (32), Linux, Mac OS X, FreeBSD, Solaris or IRIX
License: GNU General Public License, Open source
Status: Version 1.0.0, Active
Link: http://www.flightgear.org

FlightGear is a community developed flight sim that is trying to create an accurate and open flight simulation engine, SimGear. While it lacks a lot in comparison to its commercial counterparts, FlightGear is open and runs well on many computers.

Despite the outdated graphics, the underlying flight model is relatively accurate. There is a online community dedicated to creating new content that adds to FlightGear's ever growing terrain repository.

FlightGear comes packaged with a number of aircraft, and many more are available online. There is support for most standard flight models, and it is relatively easy to create new aircraft.

FlightGear is not focused on becoming a game in the traditional sense, so there is a learning curve. The game is not always user-friendly and it will sometimes require a knowledge of the basic project/code structure. It also still lacks many features, but version 1.0.0 is a large improvement over its predecessors.

.kkrieger

Category: First Person Shooter
Mode(s): Singleplayer

Platform(s): Windows
License: Freeware
Status: Beta, (Halted Activity???)
Link: http://www.theprodukkt.com/kkrieger#24

kkrieger is an truly amazing demonstration of procedural storage. The entire game is just 96Kb in size, that is about one texture for many other games. kkrieger is a full game with multiple levels, decent graphics for 2004, and lots of content. The extremely small size is achieved by storing all textures and meshes procedurally. Currently this method sacrifices some performance, but it offers examples of several interesting concepts.

This is a beta, so there are many bugs and some drivers are not supported well. There are many optimizations that need to be implemented. While the game itself plays fine, but I would consider it more of an technical demonstration rather than a full game.

F.E.A.R. Combat

Category: First Person Shooter
Mode(s): multiplayer

Platform(s): Windows

F.E.A.R. Combat is the full multiplayer experience from F.E.A.R. It allows players to play against other free players, as well as those who bought the game.

The game has all the basic multiplayer modes and the maps are set in varying locations, mostly with dark themes. There is nothing revolutionary about the gameplay, but it is still fun.

Tremulous

Category: First Person Shooter / Real Time Stratagy
Mode(s): multiplayer

Platform(s): FreeBSD, Linux, Mac OS X & Windows
License: Code: GPL, media: CC-BY-SA 2.5, Open Source
Status: Active
Link: http://tremulous.net/

Tremulous is a first person shooter with elements of RTS. It is humans vs aliens, however the aliens are much like bugs, not humanoids. During play, players must build bases for their team to survive. There are a variety of buildings for both teams. Humans upgrade their weapons and other abilities, while aliens unlock new evolutionary stages.

Humans must also purchase weapons and armor during gameplaye. There are a wide variety of weapons for the humans, and the aline classes are all unique. Teams are surprisingly well balanced.

Gameplay is multiplayer only and while slower then some, it can also be very quick. Tremulous provides a unique twist on the alien vs human concept, and this is only further enhanced by building and upgrades. Some players may not enjoy this combination game styles, and other players may not like the insect style of the aliens. For most players, both of these features are seen as benefits.

Kumoon

Category: Physics based puzzle game (third person shooter)
Mode(s): Singleplayer

Platform(s): Mac OS X & Windows
License: freeware
Status: No longer active
Link: http://mayoneez.1g.fi/kumoon/

Kumoon is a physics based puzzle game. " Players controls a chick that tries to knock down boxes in various rooms by shooting them with a revolver, shotgun or a bazooka. "

"The goal of the game is to complete all the rooms successfully. The only way you can complete a room is to have 0 or positive points when you have tilted over all the red/green boxes.

Normally you cannot complete a room just by shooting at the boxes directly. You will get too many penalty points for using too many bullets. Instead you need to use the score multiplier feature. This can be done by bouncing the bullet from the wall before hitting the red/green boxes. This way the points you get will be multiplied by 10 (or 20 or 30, depending on how many bounces the bullet makes before hitting the boxes).

Note that the first shot is always free, regardless of weapon. A good way is to use either the shotgun or the bazooka for the first shot, since they are much more powerful that the revolver. After the first bullet you probably want to use the revolver, because you get much less penalty points for using the revolver bullets." (Official website)

Kumoon is a very addictive game that is simple and fun. The level set is rather easy to complete, but there are multitudes of different ways to solve each puzzle. If you enjoy a challenge, or just blowing up piles of boxes with cartoon physics, i defiantly recommend this game

Boomshine is a casual Flash puzzle game. The object of the Boomshine is to create a chain reaction that reacts with a certain number of ever moving dots. A player ignites this chain reaction by clicking once on the screen.

Each level is progressively more difficult than the last, requiring a higher percentage or reactions. While it is easy to complete all 12 levels, this game is fun and entertaining to watch.

Gamma Bros

Category: Arcade shooter
Mode(s): Singleplayer

Platform(s): Mac, Windows, Online Flash
License: freeware
Status: Unknown
Link: http://www.pixeljam.com/gammabros/

Gamma Bros is an arcade space shooter that retains a classic look and feel.

The Gamma Bros spend their day working on a space station near Jupiter. Each day they must commute back to earth, and on the way they are attacked by mass armies of aliens.

The game is a multidirectional space shooter in which the player must faces seemingly endless waves of unique enemies. Both weapons and ships can be upgraded. A player originally starts as one of the Gamma bros, Buzz or Zap. Once their health runs out, the ship explodes and the player is left in a spacesuit and very exposed, a new ships can be purchased. If one player dies, they will switch to the other Brother. The other brother may be resurrected, but it will cost you.

There are 3 challenging bosses with 3 difficulty levels. Players must collect coins and gems as they blast aliens. The gameplay is fun, yet challenging. The pixel art/classic style of the game is very well suited for this type of game. I highly recommend this game to everyone.

Second life

Category: Virtual world
Mode(s): Massive Multiplayer

Platform(s): Mac, Windows, linux
License: Proprietary, free, Open Source
Status: Active
Link: http://secondlife.com/

Second life is an online virtual world that is mostly created my players. Residents can explore, make friends, build, sell items, and do just about everything else. There is an in-game economy based upon a real world exchange rate.

Residents own and maintain virtual properties as well as buying user created objects. Almost everything about the game can be customised with some knowledge. There is a built in 3d modeler and support for script via Linden Scripting Language, which is much like C.

Many companies and organizations have a presence in secondlife, including some religious groups. There are alot of interesting content that other users have created. User created cames can be played within secondlife. However, some of this user created content is rather inappropriate.

Overall, the coding structure of Second life is a nightmare. It is full of bloat and other bugs. Updates often only create more problems than solutions. The system is unstable and prone to crashes.

This type of "game" may suit some players, but other may find it dull and pointless. The graphics are nothing to brag about either. There are much greater rewards IMO for those who actually create the content or code.

(Warning: May contain questionable content)

Particles

Category: casual game
Mode(s): Single Player

Platform(s): flash
License: free

Particles is a very simple, and very addictive, online flash game. Players must dodge red particles in a frictionless world. The red particles follow some rules of physics, so they will collide and transfer their energy. Because of this, red particles may have different speeds. The player is a blue particle which must avoid these red particles. The number of red particles starts out at three, and gradually increases. Once the player's particle touches a red particle, the game is over. I found this game very addictive.

Liquid War

Category: Action
Mode(s): Single and Multiplayer

Platform(s): Cross-Platform
License: GNU General Public License
Status: Not very active
Link: http://www.ufoot.org/liquidwar/

Liquid War is a very unique game. Each player controls a group of liquid particles that will follow his/her cursor. Particles follow the shortest path around obstacles.

Groups of different player's particles fight each other. Depending on the locations of the cursors, particles will either fight back or be assimilated. Particles do not disappear, they only change teams. A player wins by assimilating all the other particles, or by having the highest percentage of particles when time runs out.

Players can play against the computer or online with five other players. The rules of the game can be adjusted.

Overall, Liquid War is defiantly showing its age. Liquid War 6 should be out sometime in the next two centuries, and should fix these problems. The gameplay ranges from extremely slow to very fast paced. Despite its age, Liquid War is still a fun and unique game.

Yes it is.

Linden labs makes their money by selling game currency and properties to people that have no real life.

A while ago, they required a credit card number to join, but I believe that was only to have some sort of age verification system. That has since been removed.
