You guys have done great explaining to me in the past and so I have come with another question for y'all.

Could someone please explain what it means when a church is a 'free' church. There's a church around here thats called 'evangical free church'. What does that mean? They're free from evangalizing? I just don't understand, but I've seen it more than once.

Thanks in advance for your reply's.:)

Churches such as the "free methodist" church got there name over the issue of slavery in the United States. Many denominations had splits over that issue in the 1800's. I will have to do some research to see if that is the reason behind the evangelical free churche's name.

Ahhh, this makes sense. Thanks

I looked it up. Historically, for the evangelical free church, the term "free" meant free as in not state controlled .
I'm not sure what you mean by this. I didn't think any American churches had anything to do with the state.

 Thanks for the help Yitzchak!

The EV Free denomination started in Europe. It originally was a group of churches not directly controlled and associated with the government (i.e... lutheranism). They still use the name in America despite the fact that we have no state church (because of our constitution).

I belong to an Evangelical Free Church. http://www.efca.org/about/index.html gives you some information on the history etc. We believe in the triune God. We believe that Jesus is God and became human flesh when he was born to the Virgin Mary. We believe that he died for our sins, and rose from the dead on the 3rd day. We believe the the Bible is the Word of God. We believe in the inerrancy of the original autographs of the bible.
