Honestly, I don't know of a Service Member who doesn't know the name of Fred Phelps.

The guy pickets funerals of Service Members who've died in combat. He degrades their dignity when they're in the least position to defend it.

Can't the military do something about this pest?

Outside the desire perhaps to call in an airstrike, there aint much the military can do. The majority of funerals are in civilian public/private cemetaries and are outside the US military jurisdiction and control.

Fortunately there are some groups that do try to help deal with this alleged religious organization. One is a "biker" group called the Patriot Guards that shields the hatemongering rabble from the mourners and I salute them for their honorable assist.

As a veteran that has been to more military funerals in my career than I care to count, I truly wish that something could be done but their repugnant actions are protected by the same constitution I swore an oath to defend.

We just try to ignore them and generally you will have the bikers show up plus people picketing against them.

They are just evil...plain and simple...evil beings.

They are just evil. It's horrible to see it on TV. I could not imagine being there in person and seeing that. I really feel for the families.

The problem with the Patriot Guard having to show up is that it disrupts what used to be a solemn, quiet, dignified funeral and turns it into a circus.

I'm glad Phelps didn't show up at my Grandfather's funeral, where he received a gun salute from the Air Force. I'm somewhat hoping I can attend one of the funerals he pickets...

Nothing we can do without betraying that which we fight for. ignore him long enough and he'll get desperate enought o step over a legal line. At that point we can arrest and prosecute him.
