  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Hi all,

What are your thoughts on the Franciscan Friar, Father Casey Cole?

I know a lot of controversy surrounds him.

Any opinions?

Thanks
Personally not a fan. I try to consider that maybe others get something out of his content. I worry about heterodoxy though, it seems like he's traded orthodoxy for relevance and appeal.

I should note though that I have almost no experience with his stuff, I've only seen a couple things here and there but those things did give me pause. I can't even remember what they were now.

I find it peculiar how wildly disparate different groups of Franciscans can be. Like the CFRs (Franciscan Friars of the Renewal) are pretty Orthodox as are the MFVA's (Franciscan Missionaries of the Eternal Word - the order founded by Mother Angelica at EWTN). But then you have Friars like Fr Casey, or this Franciscan parish I took my family to occasionally when we lived in Virginia (St Francis of Assisi in Triangle, VA) were so liberal.

I'm sure other orders deal with this but it seems most common with the Franciscans. Is it cause Francis of Assisi kind of has this (rightly or wrongly) this hippy dippy counter culture reputation and so it attracts "progressive" seminarians? Even if a parish is just named for Saint Francis but doesn't necessarily have a connection to a Franciscan order the parish is almost guaranteed to be liberal/progressive/modernist. I don't see the same with Dominicans, Benedictines, Capuchins, Norbertines, etc.
