  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I use an app on my tab but I will admit a book in the hand is much, much better.

Readers Absorb Less on Kindle

Reading in Print Helps Comprehension

eBooks are Damaging your Health!
Use a reader or a computer with 4K pixel resolution and these objections soon fade away. So called HD 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution is comparable to stone chiseled words when compared to 4K resolution.

Quick now, post all the comments by the ECF related to predestination. Electronically this is done in a few mouse clicks. With paper this will, er, take awhile. ;)

The common objections to eBooks ignore the plain fact that many have been born never knowing life without a computer, so the usual complaints of retention and comprehension are often specious when environment and cultural upbringing are taken into account.

They go on sale once or twice a year on ChristianBook.com for $99.99. Just sayin.

Oh, I didn't know that. Well then :)

Wish I'd known that when I got mine. Even with shipping I'd likely have saved a bunch.

I agree it is much faster, easier and should be a resource we use when studying. That isn't the point. It was about retaining what you have learned and studies show their is a tactile element to learning that can't be duplicated with an eReader. Studies also show that cursive writing teaches one to think more logically and write much better. That's another topic for another time.

How many times have you and I posted material that, we know by the response we read in reply, haven't even been looked at? It happens all the time because people have lost the art of learning/reasoning and studies who this is often due to convenience. I've seen Arminians post quotes they obviously haven't read or read in context, but pulled them off of some site, believing they support their view. Why? Because it was fast and easy. This world thinks in tweets! That's the issue I have with the idea of faster means better when all it really means is faster means faster.

I'm not objecting to eBooks. I'm objecting to ebooks only or preferred for reasons already cited. I would recommend a fairly old title by today's standards, The Shallows by Carr, who explains the effects our modern technology is having on how we learn.

I actually wrote 4 more paragraphs but deleted them. Only AMR and I would probably read them. lol

Yours in the Lord,

jm

I agree with the issue of becoming intellectually lazy via the use of electronic media. This is especially true for those already predisposed for said laziness, as in the typical Arminian or Romanist. Maybe the guidance should be something along the lines of that if one is Arminian, no ebooks allowed. If one is a Calvinist, it does not matter because you have already demonstrated some ability to digest difficult topics. ;)

I've always felt Reformed circles have a far more academic and scholastic approach to faith and Scripture.

Perhaps this is just another medium through which that is demonstrated.

not always the reason. i now just use to read from eBooks for the reason my eyes does not read clearly now from small print letters. i can resize fonts, highlight important notes from a big lcd screen which are cheap nowadays.

I think there is something true about that. When one surveys the systematic theologies used in seminaries or have been written in the past and held in high regard invariably one finds them to be Reformed in their doctrinal approaches. The fact that men so gifted and spending years of their lives immersed in Scripture end up on the side of the Reformed should give a person pause to consider that these men might just be onto something worth consideration.

You will want to investigate computers that support 4K screen resolution over the usual 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution found on most computers. This will make all the difference in the world when reading electronically. Stop by an Apple or Microsoft store and look at the screens of an iPad with Retina display or a Microsoft Surface Pro 4 to see the vast difference in how text is rendered using ultra high definition resolutions. Once you see how clear text is rendered in UHD (4K), you will never be satisfied with 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution.
