Why do the ancestors have to be immediate? If I wish to prove that I am descended from the Smiths, and I don't have my Father's birth certificate, why won't my grand-father, great-grandfather, or even cousin do - if I can give good and credible reasons to believe that I they are related to me?

I never claimed that it could not be done, just that it is hard to do so. If you want a unbroken chain that is even harder since fosilization is rather rare even under the best of conditions.
