i was just wondering, is it possible to make a realtime forum? Like when someone posts something it automatically shows up and the browser automatically refreshes. I notice that the chat box causes the browser to refresh every time someone posts, could that be done for the entire forum?

Well that chat box is java so it's not the same. I'm sure it's possible but not existant. If you can do that you may as well call it IRC. Would be a nice trick to link IRC to MySQL. Can't thing of a single reason why though

yeah its java but it has some code that causes your browser to refresh when posts are made, i suppose if the browser refreshed every time a post was made on this forum it would be constantly refreshing, which would kill the 56kers.

I think it's just the chat window that reloads.

i'm not sure if i understood you correctly, but wouldn't it be frustrating if people are posting all the time? like say someone was about to reply to something, and the screen were to refresh on it's own.
do i make sense? and is that what you're talking about?

It's possible, simple actually, not practical. To much server load would be required. And you'd slow down your connection at which your site is feed to the internet if you have a lots of users.

When you hit the refresh button you notice, the only thing you are talking about is called a CHAT ROOM, and those already exist.

Until the day when all the web is a realtime interactive forum, I seriously doubt it.

Slowroasted, HTML chats do what you are talking about. You can actually continue typing out your post while the chat window constantly refreshes itself.
Why would you want to do such a thing?

It's an interesting thought, but I don't think I would like it, I hate losing my spot when I'm reading a thread and making replys. It would be hard to keep your place if the page keeps refreshing, I think.People are constantly replying and the page would keep changing and refreshing. I woulod go nuts. LOL!
