  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Another one on the trip from Christian to non-theist. Went along the quite common path of trying to believe, lacking faith, and accepting non-theism. If I were ever to go back, Catholicism was definitely the Christian flavor with which I could most readily identify emotionally.

MehGuy, do you mind me asking what denomination you were a member of?

you have mentioned several times that you used to be a Christian but I never knew what church

I was told growing up that we were non-denominational. I never really took the time to study various sects. I mostly did my own thing and came to my own beliefs, I never had a name for them.

When I lost my faith as a Christian I actually wanted to start my own religion, yet my atheism made that impossible, lol.

If I had to do it all over again I'd probably look more into Catholicism. Sadly my father always bad mouthed Catholicism and I never really delved deeper into it.

Grew up to parents who were baptized catholic, but didn't practice catholicism.
They did not baptize me as an infant ( something Catholics practice) because they wanted me to 'choose my own way'
so when i grew to the age of 14 i became a non denominational christian.
I got baptized at summer camp.
I am now a conservative christian.

I grew up in a Baptist church. But I do not live in the south so it wasn't exactly your typical southern Baptist church. After that I went to a non-denominational church for a while. It was less "strict" but had the same core beliefs. Now I'm back at a different Baptist church.

I don't necessarily feel like I'm a Baptist though. I agree with EazyMack. I'm just a sinner who got saved by Christ and Christ alone. I just appreciate the values of the church I'm going to. If I move away someday, I'd hope to find another Baptist church, or maybe a good non-denominational church.

As a young child, I was atheist...I was not raised or exposed to religion.

5 grade I was put into a 4 squares/charismatic type Christian school and decided I wanted to go to church because my friends did, but my stepfather put me in the Mormon church.

Got baptized mormon.

Gave that up somewhere in my teens and was more non-denom Christian. Got involved in a LCMS Lutheran church for a while.

Am now agnostic/atheist with some pantheistic tendencies.

I've always been an evangelical Christian, but have been exposed to several different denominations.

In pre-k and also 7th and 8th grade I went to a Lutheran school. I actually went through a year of confirmation in 8th grade because it was one of the classes during the day, but didn't get confirmed.

My whole life up until college I attended a Nazarene church regularly. In college, I attended First Evangelical Free, Christian & Missionary Alliance, and independent churches. When I moved home after graduating college I attended a United Methodist Church for a year, and then in January of last year I began attending a Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) church.

Theologically, I grew up Arminian (makes sense growing up Nazarene), and then in college I became a Calvinist. I attended the United Methodist Church after graduating even though I disagree with their theology because that's where my family was going at the time, and I wanted to go to church with them. But after that year, I realized I had reached my ceiling as far as the level of involvement I could have there, and at that point moved to my current church that I absolutely love and plan to attend as long as I'm living here.

I've been in the Churches of Christ my whole life. There was a while in high school where I went to a very charismatic, fundamentalist school that claimed it was "nondenominational". It felt like I was apart of a different religion.
