  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Forgiveness - need for a laundry list of sins during confession?

If a Christian were to want to attain forgiveness from our Holy Father, would it be necessary, to go out and list all our sins (confession) and ask absolution?

or is it enough to know in ourselves the sins we have committed, and know that our Father knows them too and pray as we were taught to by his Son, "... and forgive us our trespasses as we too will forgive those who trespass against us" , thus asking for a general forgiveness, while targeting our sins specifically in specifically repenting from those sins and turning away from them...?

Didn't you start a similar thread in this forum a couple of days ago?

We're already forgiven. People can jump through flamming hoops all they want.....

It's not necessary; but the more particular you can be, the better. After all, one purpose of a confessional prayer is to make yourself aware of your sins, the better to enable you to change. We're unlikely to acheive spiritual perfection; but we can strive for progress.

I believe we repent to Christ. Asking for Christ's forgiveness, if you did something to hurt someone else, you should ask for their forgiveness and then you change your life and be the person Christ wants you to be.

Remember we do sin, even as Christians
1 John 1:8-9
If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

you get forgiveness either way... the point here is not 'how do we avoid hell', the point is 'now that we are saved, what do we do next?' the point of confession is to encourage repentance, and the point of repentance is to increase your faith, be a good example of Christ, and ultimately realize that those who don't sin as much are happier.
