In the Old Testament (Psalms 51:11 for one), there is evidence of the presence of the Holy Spirit in the lives of men. But in the New Testament, Christ tells the apostles he must leave them so that the Holy Spirit can come to them.

At what point did the Holy Spirit withdraw from mankind, and did the Holy Spirit's relationship and powers in the lives of men change with Christ's resurrection and departure?

Christ is referring to when the Holy Spirit will come to convict the world of sin judgment and rightouness. Christ said to His apostles later on at the last supper that it is good that He goes so He can send the Holy Spirit to us.

Can a down home Baptist agree?

I honestly believe that the Holy Spirit was totaly imbodied in Jesus. At His death He gave it up.
