• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

3rd Link, thank you so much for your post (and thanks for the  )! God has empowered you with wisdom beyond your years.
Don't feel bad about your parents, they just don't know. Education about depression has not been wide-spread enough. Many people think it is all in our heads (which it is, but not the way they think it is.)
When I first began taking Prozac, I did some research on it and found out that it isn't a psychotropic or mind altering drug. It merely helps your brain out with a serotonin imbalance. There are some who have a genetic propensity for this imbalance, and there are those whose environment causes it. Of course, when I told my superiors that I was taking prozac, they took me off normal duty (as a police officer) because they thought it would 'do something' to my ability to reason and they didn't want me armed. Once my doctor explained it to them, they put me back on duty. But that's a perfect example of the misconception many people have about depression and its treatments.
If you do a search on the net for 'depression' you will find many sources of information on causes, treatments, and definitions of each. These sources may help you educate your parents on the reality of depression, how it is caused and how it can be treated. With the attitude you already have, I'd bet that just a little bit of medical or nutritional guidance would go a long way to freeing you of depression.
God bless.

P.S.: Sunlight is GREAT. In fact, a lack of sunlight is one of the major depression triggers in many people. Keep soaking up the sun. :)

Good thread peeps... might as well jump in.

Personally I've been suffering from depression for 10+ years now (wow time flies when your having fun), heh. Its been an ongoing struggle every day ... with some being better then others. I'm not really sure what precipitated my current state ... stress I suppose combined with a variety of life circumstances. At that time I had never heard about depression and so didn't understand what was happening to me. I started losing weight ... lost interest in all my sports/hobbies ... was totally exhaused all the time ... my concentration then disappeared followed by my short term memory ... self worth and confidence next drained away ... and when you lose all that thoughts of suicide are bound to follow. Pretty much tried every antidepressant out there combined along with counselling, nutricuticals etc ... all to no avail. I've since learned that roughing 15% of depressed people don't ever respond positively to medication and so have to try other avenues. So ... these days I'm doing alot of my own research reading journals and papers related to growing worldwide epidemic that is depression. One recent tidbit I came across of personal interest was in a European journal which established that there is a correlation between left hemisphere head trauma and the later development of depression. So ... I'm figuring that if I had the left side of my brain removed ... things should improve right ? ;) Had my parents made me wear a bike helmet earlier in my life ... maybe things would have been different, so wear your lids kids. :) Needless to say I have several helmets these days ... don't really know if they would help when doing 80 km/hour through twisty mountain gorges ... but at least I look stylish wearing it, heh... I also figure one of these times I'm bound to have a head injury that does something POSITIVE for me. ;) Hopefully one of these days things will improve though... but in the meantime I trust in God that He knows whats best in my life. Honestly it's pretty amazing to see how He provides ... truely astonishing at times. My faith has grown immensely over the past 10 years ... so maybe my depression has been a GOOD THING, heh. :)
