Well, here's what happened. He was doing the pre-exam stuff, and he was pressing on various spots on my belly. One of them in the lower left part of my abdomen had pain, which I've had for probably a couple of years now. My primary care doctor never acted concerned about it, and my previous obgyn never noticed it. This doctor I guess was concerned, so when he was doing my pelvic exam he started feeling around more in that area, but from the inside (sorry to get so graphic). That's when he felt something.
He said he doesn't know what it is, or even where exactly it is. He said he could be feeling my uterus, if it was enlarged or enflamed for some reason, he said it could be a cyst on an ovary or on my uterus, it could be a mass in or on my uterus, or it could be bowel. He really had no firm ideas. He asked about any other symptoms, but I honestly can't say I've had anything that he mentioned, except that sometimes when I sneeze or cough hard a little pee leaks out (again, sorry for the graphics, gah). But he didn't seem really concerned about that part.
So he said to be sure what we might be dealing with, the two ultrasounds - one inside, one outside - were the way to go, and we could talk about the next step one we know what he was feeling. One of my sisters has had cysts on her ovaries, so maybe it's something like that. I don't know if these things run in families or not. Another sister had a hysterectomy, but I don't know why - just that she was in the oncology (cancer) unit of the hospital.
But even if it's something relatively benign, whatever it is will still have to come out won't it? I mean... do they leave cysts, or do they always remove them?
