  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

For lent, this year I am not going to participate in creation/evolution debates. It's hard for me to remember how much I have in common with creationist Christians when all I do is focus on their creationism.

Lent starts March 5 and continues until April 17.

In that time I hope to focus on what I do have in common with creationist believers.

Don't worry - I'll b back April 18, still an evolutionist. Still a Christian.

A Christian evolutionist to me is the same as a peaceful Muslims. It does not really fit, 365 days an year.

Ya, it's also kind of a thankless job in many ways.

Enjoy Lent. :)

Interesting.... is Lent only for Catholics (I was raised Catholic, so I used to participate)?

The Lutheran Church I grew up in didn't typically put ashes on their forehead, but they did so occasionally and talked about the meaning behind it. Lent wasn't as "big of a deal" in the Lutheran tradition, but they still acknowledged it.

I don't decorate myself with religious iconography.

If I want to make an impression on the public, I'll carry a 1611 KJB under my arm just to see their expressions.

ETA: On second thought, I do wear ties that make statements. :/

Ya, the actual ash on Ash Wednesday wasn't done often, and that was usually the reason. They did explain it's significance to the Catholic Church, but there was a preference for an inner reflection rather than an outward expression.

Wouldn't it be easier to just give up candy or something?

Giving up arguing with creationists for Lent saves a lot more time and reduces stress a lot more than giving up candy. (I've done the creationist thing for Lent, but never candy. I also gave up reading political blogs one Lent.)
