Flying on Sabbath

Hi all

There is a movie competition here in NZ, where senior high school students have a challenge to make a 5 minute movie on evolution. My (secular) teacher is greatly encouraging me to make a video that explains my views on evolution (that I don't believe in it)

I'm actually rather interested in entering, as I think I could do quite well (as long as there wasn't any bias!) and might have a shot at a prize.

But the prizes are travel prizes. One is a 2 week trip to the UK during a 2 week holiday period. So likely, we would be leaving on Sabbath or flying on Sabbath.

If its morally wrong I won't even bother entering. So what do ya'll think?

There is no easy answer to this very complex question.

Do we stop using power that has been made on the Sabbath? Someone has to be at work to give us the power.

The list goes on and on.

Just from my own point of view I will avoid flying on Sabbath as much as possible.

Well, I agree. I would prefer to spend Sabbath at church. But I don't think that there is anything wrong with flying on the Sabbath. And if it is considerably cheaper/more convenient, will do so.

Unsure. Its a prize, so I'd wonder if they would have it already booked any everything. I am going to email those holding the competition and check.

But if we fly out just before sunset, I should be OK. Because we'd be flying towards the UK, which would mean we'd be going backwards in terms of time. Yet here also comes the thought of going back- if we leave just before sabbath, there'll be sabbath over the water, I think, though only for a few hours at maximum... eh its so complicated figuring out sabbath when you're flying between different time zones!

There is no law that says Sabbath must be kept in a concrete, brick or wooden building between 9.30 and 1pm, you can keep the Sabbath on a plane. Shock horror Adam and Eve observed it in a garden! Lets not try to outdo the Pharisees....

I don't intend to debate with you in the main section. But what Jesus talked about in Matt 24 was for both the destruction of Jerusalem and the end time.

Windmill is not being persecuted on a Sabbath, but if she was and the only way of escape was a plane you would advice her not to take it?

Maybe because was hard to take 'flight' (LOL) in the winter (because it's cold), and when you're pregnant (for obvious reasons), and on the Sabbath (because the gates of the city were locked).

Did Christ tell people not to flee on the Sabbath? No, he said that it would be worse to flee on the Sabbath. Not that you weren't suppose to do so.

Correct. He said they were to 'PRAY' that their fleeing DIDN'T take place on the Sabbath (or in winter, or while pregnant).

always go on the side of caution if not sure on a subject or on something. always do the "safe" thing if you know what i mean. is better to miss something and make the Lord happy by honoring him as opposed to doing something and it be displeasing to Him. Pray and do what the Lord leads. You know in your heart what you should do.
