Flying on Sabbath

Hi all

There is a movie competition here in NZ, where senior high school students have a challenge to make a 5 minute movie on evolution. My (secular) teacher is greatly encouraging me to make a video that explains my views on evolution (that I don't believe in it)

I'm actually rather interested in entering, as I think I could do quite well (as long as there wasn't any bias!) and might have a shot at a prize.

But the prizes are travel prizes. One is a 2 week trip to the UK during a 2 week holiday period. So likely, we would be leaving on Sabbath or flying on Sabbath.

If its morally wrong I won't even bother entering. So what do ya'll think?

Even if you won and then didn't take the trip it would be great to enter and shed a bit of light in the darkness!

windmill, i travel a lot! and when we travel, more times than not it is for personal/vaction reasons. my husband and i have made it a policy not to fly on Sabbath. i think there has been one or two times when it couldnt be avoided and we felt guilty. when we reached our destination, we said never again. we would bring our own food and put it in our carry on so we could eat, and we would get drinks free on the plane. but still the point of the flight attendants having to serve us, the people working at the check in gates, etc., we just didnt feel right.

i have heard that several mainstream sda evangelists sometimes fly on sabbath (because it is unavoidable sometimes) but i heard them talking about the same things i have mentioned above.

search your heart and pray that the Holy Spirit guides and directs you to do what is right. Dont do or dont do something just because someone else says yes or no. Do what the Lord leads you to do.

Just getting on a plane and flying on Sabbath isn't working. You already had it payed for you earlier. But it is up to you and your own conscious.

Jesus in Matthew 24 talks about for the believers that their flight from persecution may not be on sabbath in the end time.

The Sabbath was made to benefit man not man to benefit the Sabbath.

See this is the thing. We so easily write that off as "eh.. what can I do?" Yet we will not fly on Sabbath. But despite the fact I do not see any difference, I still feel guilty.

Flying is a form of transportation like walking, using a horse, donkey, or driving a car. So who does not do all these things on a Sabbath. Besides Jesus advice was to do with the destruction of Jerusalem, windmill's experince is so different.
Windmill follow your heart rather than following what we advice, we are not your Saviour.

When I drive the car on sabbath, sometimes I pay toll to get to different churches. Yeah, there are people who are working for you at the toll booth. But I don't have a choice. Either I go or I don't go.

There is a difference between flying on sabbath to do a missionary trip and flying on sabbath to go to a vacation destination.

I don't intend to debate with you in the main section. But what Jesus talked about in Matt 24 was for both the destruction of Jerusalem and the end time.

I agree with this.

Basically, I try to avoid traveling on the Sabbath as well. However, I wouldn't feel guilty if I did. If you can just as easily travel on another day, though, then why choose to travel on the Sabbath, as it substantially keeps you from doing what the purpose of the day is?

In situations where you do not have a choice, however, then I believe you should go ahead and travel. I think the issue is the spirit and motive behind your actions. Someone who travels on the Sabbath for no reason is showing contempt for God's law, but someone else traveling the Sabbath who has their heart right with God, and has no other choice, is not showing any contempt at all.

In my opinion, I'd say enter the contest. Tell God that you're concerned about this possibility and ask they His will be done in the matter..then do your best.

If, by His will, you win..then see if the date would be on a Sabbath and if it's not changable. At that point, ask Him and let Him impress in you what to do. Worst case, give the trip to a friend who doesn't keep the Sabbath.

I've heard some good, interesting advise that will make me think hard about what I would do if I win and we must travel on Sabbath. But I think nvertheless I will still enter the competition. I agree, it'd be a good witness thanks all.

Unsure. Its a prize, so I'd wonder if they would have it already booked any everything. I am going to email those holding the competition and check.

But if we fly out just before sunset, I should be OK. Because we'd be flying towards the UK, which would mean we'd be going backwards in terms of time. Yet here also comes the thought of going back- if we leave just before sabbath, there'll be sabbath over the water, I think, though only for a few hours at maximum... eh its so complicated figuring out sabbath when you're flying between different time zones!
