• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Flood of Intrusive thoughts

I get a flood of intrusive blasphemous thoughts that disturb me and make me feel as though I lose my Salvation, which causes me to ask for Salvation again and again.

The next and most important problem though is when I am asking for Salvation I get intrusive thoughts about whether or not I deserve Christ taking my place in punishment for sins. which causes an intrusive thought about rejecting, which spikes me up bad, when I would never do that, when I Accept Jesus Christ Salvation. I can't fight compulsions either because then I'll feel like I'm not Saved.

Pray for me and give me advice on this issue, The Holy Spirit guided me to asking this question here on the forums.

I don't have much to say right now. Except I know the feeling and how awful it is. Having been there myself. When you have an intrusive thought, allow it to be there. Don't fight it by doing compulsions. If you do, you will become more entrenched in the OCD cycle.

Are you seeing a therapist for help with your OCD?

Can't risk my Salvation.

No, don't want meds or therapy, just need this current OCD to go away like the previous bouts.

Continuing to do compulsions when the intrusive thoughts strike strengthens the OCD cycle. Part of dealing with OCD is learning to deal with uncertainty. Why are you against therapy and medication? I see a counselor for my OCD and take medication. Both have helped tremendously. God can work through counselors who can help you manage your OCD along with meds.

OCD is highly treatable. One treatment method is called ERP (a.k.a. Exposure Response Prevention. ERP is able to gradually expose a person to the feared situation. Or if the thoughts deal with violence or blasphemeous thoughts, the therapist can help the client create an imaginal exposure exercise. When the person is exposed enough to the feared situation the associated anxiety will decrease. You can Google ERP to know more.

I am not going to reassure you because no amount of assurance will make a difference. It may help for a while but the feeling won't last. I struggled with OCD in various forms for 7 years befor being diagnosed and starting treatment. Your road to recovery will go much smoother if you working with a therapist who specializes in OCD.

What I felt helped me is surrendering my OCD obsessions to God. I have found that this, as well as doing ERP has made a difference.

If you don't click with the first therapist, keep trying until you find one you click with.

The only way to treat OCD is to face your fears head on through ERP. It is scary at first, but it is worth it in the long run. I just pray that the Holy Spirit speaks to you through this post and that God comforts and strengthens you.

God bless!

This is how I overcame OCD. Number 1, God knows about what you are struggling with. He is not going to remove salvation from you. Your salvation is under God's protection. To ease your anxiety, just say one prayer, "Dear God, I'm going to allow these thoughts to come, (because trying to fight it off is time consuming, and I am just feeding it) but You know I don't like those thoughts, and I don't agree with them, I just struggle with OCD. Please protect my salvation."

I said one prayer, the thoughts came, no big deal, I let them go, and next thing I knew, I was delivered. Yes, I've had the worse thoughts, worse of the worse, and I overcame it. And now I see God has been with me this whole time. In a way, it was like I had to learn how to trust Him. He is God after all, loving and patient. He wants to set us free.

"And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ." Philippians 1:6

"That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet this is no cause for shame, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until that day." 2 Timothy 1:12

"To him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy—" Jude 1:24

"I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.” John 10:28-30

He's never going to let you go. Amen.

Well put!

I know the feeling that you need to attend to these fears. I mean, it seems to make sense right? If you aren't saved, why wouldn't you do everything to make sure that you are?

The problem with people with OCD is that we can always find a new reason why we might not be saved. We think things like: "What if I didn't really mean my prayer for salvation?" "What if I stopped believing in God?" "What if I rejected salvation?"

There are a lot of what-ifs you can ask, but the fact of the matter is that OCD gives you irrational fears. If you asked Christ into your life, then you're set. OCD can make you feel like you've lost it all, but our salvation is rooted in Scripture, not our feelings.

It is very important to trust what the Scriptures say, rather than relying exclusively on our feelings. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying to disregard feelings entirely, but make sure to back them up by facts by what the Scripture says.

And OCD can't be reasoned with. OCD will do anything to make you doubt anything and everything.

You seem to know that the intrusive thoughts are OCD talking and that is all it is, it is your illness talking and it is lying to you. You can just look at the intrusive thoughts as lies and you know the truth already. Keep your mind on the truth as much as you can. Praying for you.
