  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It is argued in the creationist literature that the many layers of geologic strata are the result of a global deluge. In this thread, rather than discussing the flood, I want to discuss specifically how limestone is formed. What is it comprised of and how does it become a layer of rock? Keep in mind that there are several types of limestone.

One angle I would like to discuss is the comparison between the Grand Canyon and the so-called "Little Grand Canyon" created by the Mt. St. Helen's eruption. The former features limestone (as well as sandstone and shale), while the latter is made of mud. Creationists like to claim the creation of the little grand canyon is a perfect model for the creation of the real Grand Canyon. Yet, I wonder how many of them know if mud can turn into limestone... whether under the supposed pressure of the flood waters or not.

Indeed. The conditions and processes under which limestone is formed. Therefore, Chalk, Coquina, Fossilifersous limestone, Lithographic limestone, Oolitic limestone, Travertine, and Tufa.

I'd also question why there only seems to be one grand canyon, where I would think that if it was caused by a global flood, the Earth would be covered with thousands of grand canyons, all leading to the seas. And all look pretty much identical minus some minor changes due to the base rock they're on. They should be everywhere.

The global flood would have not only been a huge topographically deforming event, but the energy release would have boiled the oceans. I want more canyons, and I want them right now.

tl;dr: Where are the other grand canyons?

I agree, but in this thread I want to discuss how limestone forms and under what conditions.

What is it comprised of ...
Billions of dead things, buried in rock layers, laid down by water all over the earth?

Well, you are in the same town as the ball park, but you need to get into that ball park and onto the playing field. Try again.

No all limestone's are made up dead critters. Some are a result of chemical precipitation. And rather than buried in rock layers, how do they become a layer of rock?
