  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'm doing a research paper on the flood and I wanted to know what some of the main problems and arguments atheists and others had about the Biblical flood. I would love information from either side of the spectrum and links would make my day:) I'm not looking to start a debate or anything I really just want opinions. Please, post them. Anything would help me out.

Thanks:D

Hey, be careful about generalizing there :) (Not everyone who doesn't believe in a global flood is an atheist)

As to the flood, there are many problems. For example, you would need at least 1,426,700 years to form all the world's limestone. And I mean at least, that number is really pushing it.

Where'd the water go?
And where'd it all come from?

For a variety of problems with the flood story, you can look here and here. That should give you plenty of information to work with. Good luck with the paper.

No problem. Hope it helps.:)

1) no global flood layer.
2) no universal bottlenecking of species.
3) changes in salinity would have killed nearly all fish.
4) feeding and housing 2-7 of everything and redistributing them afterwards.
5) not enough water on earth to cover everest.
6) ships didnt get nearly that big until steel reinforcement in the mid 1800s.

If the bible account of the flood is correct, how did animals, plants, humans, insects, trees, and an entire tropical rainforest, make it from noah's ark to SOUTH AMERICA in 4000 years? Did tropical creatures cross in through the arctic or did they all swim?

How did plants get there, or anywhere? most types of plants couldn't survive the flood, if it happened.

What did the animals eat after they left the ark? How does a set of single pairs of animals constitute a viable ecosystem?

Why did the carnivores not wipe out most of the single breeding pairs of newly disembarked species in the first few days?

Why did the herbivores not starve given that not a whole lot of plant life would have survived 40 days under salt water?

How did noah stop the termites from eating his boat?

How did noah stop the anteaters from eating the termites?

How did a single family of humans repopulate the species in less that 4000 years, without commiting incest, and without the genetic diversity needed to prevent deformities and death?

Why were the oceans not poisoned by the incredible amount of minerals that would be washed into them by the flood runoff?

Why are there numerous ancient civilizations that existed during the supposed date of the flood, but have no record of it (Egypt, China)?

Consider:

There are an estimated 25 million -100 million animal species. Double this (two of each) and you're looking at 50 million -200 million animals.

OR

if one insists, as many do, that "kinds" is equivalent to genera, and one includes plants (they too would perish in the flood), Noah would have to take about 26,437 individuals (25,358 genera) on board (explanation if you need it). Whether 50 million - 200 million or a measly 25,358, it's still an inconceivable number of life forms to take care of---feed and clean up after--- for a year.

Also, the amount of water needed to cover the world to the top of Mount Everest is 3.42 times the amount of water now in the oceans.

(explanation if you need it)

Why do the positions of fossils not match what would be expected if they were laid down by a flood?

Creationists often claim that fossils were created by the flood and are "hydrologically sorted" ie big heavy stupid things at the bottom, smaller or more intelligent creations near the top as they moved out of the way of the rising waters. However, this is not what we find. If everything is hydrologically sorted, then oak trees can run uphill faster than pines :)

What did animals that require large populations to survive do? For exmple, one male and female bee, ant, termite and mole rat cannot survive as a single pair. I imagine several of the pack hunting species would have difficulty too... e.g. lions and wolves.

How did penguins get from Mt Ararat to Antarctica?

And the massive inundation of Fresh water would kill all the marine fish. Alternatively, if the incoming water was saline, it would kill all the fresh water fish.

Post flood, when water levels return to normal, the decaying carcasses of 99.99% of the biosphere would cause serious problems in terms of water quality, putrescence and general environmental degredation.

terestrial vegetation can't survive long fully immersed, 40 days submergeance would kill all land dwelling species of plant. Marine vegetation is usually closely adapted to its depth, i.e. a sudden change either deeper or shallower will kill most aquatic plants. Not so much a problem for free floating species, but the various species of rooted aquatic plant, like seawood and kelp, would be wiped out by being plunged under presumeably hundreds, if not thousands, of metres of water. So then, even when Noah lets all the animals out of the Ark, all the highly specialised animals who live in rain forrests, or grasslands environments, or in kelp forrests, are going to have some serious problems.

Of course, God could miraculously mirical all these problems away, but it seems kind of unlikely that the bible doesn't mention this.

Mathematically speaking, there isnt enough water to cover the surface of the Earth. My fiancee and I actually sat down and calculated this all out, how much water you'd need VS how much we actually have. I can post the calculations if you'd like
I wouldn't mind seeing this. I've been looking for something like it, actually.
