You can see the "contact with the water" of any object for three miles.
But objects can be seen with the base missing much farther.

Of course that is one case of what actually happens....in some cases. In others, objects are clearly seen over distances that are impossible with a curve of 8 inches per mile squared.

If you are going to talk about an observation that has been seen for centuries... you must also include those that I posted, that show contradictions to the curve, and have also been observed and understood as true, for centuries as well.

Here is some typical flat-earther lies and deception:



This picture is apparently taken from the window of an airplane on Lihue Airport in Kauai. That window would be about 50 metres above sea level (adjusting for the altitude of the airport). The photo apparently shows the highest point of Oahu in the distance (135 km away, using Google Earth correctly). That highest point is 1227 metres high.

Using this calculator to do the elementary trigonometry needed (I checked it by hand), we would expect the top 280 metres of Oahu to be visible without refraction, and a lot more with refraction. In other words, the photo is exactly what we would expect on a round earth.

So, the facts on this meme are wrong. The mathematics is wrong. Even the spelling is wrong. You'd need to be an idiot to be taken in by a meme like that.

Oh, and yes, the earth is round.
