  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Taking a quilting class is a really good idea. If there aren't any classes in your area, go on-line and check out some of the many quilting sites on the internet. Or if you prefer, go to the local book store or library and get a book on quilting. There are hundreds of beautifully illustrated books on quilting available, look for one with clear instructions for beginners.

Good luck, and enjoy!

i taught myself to quilt with out taking any classes, but it was a lot of trial and error. quilting is a lot of fun and there are a lot of really good books out there. The Idiot's guide to Quilting is a great one to look at. IMO start small so you don't get overwhelmed. baby quilts or wall hanging are a nice place to start. Good luck! The most important thing to remember is to just have fun.

there are a couple PBS shows and at least one on HGTV about sewing/quilting, check your listings. Also, I haven't done much but one thing I found is be very careful and exact when cutting your shapes and pieceing them together - any errors show up by throwing the pattern out of line. Good luck!

Although I don't have the space to do it yet (still living at home & I don't want to get going on too many projects at once, y'know??), I did help a friend of mine cut out the pieces for a windmill quilt she was making, with nothing but a book to go by! It was soo fun!

I don't think the cutting out/stitching together part is very hard. But when it comes to putting all the layers together, I'd advise you to get with someone who's done it before. That's the part that looks hard to me!

That is wonderful that you taught yourself. Was it very hard . Please give some advice. Thank you.

i am not sure if you are asking me or not but when i started making quilts i started making them by hand because i was terrified of sewing machine.;) I found this very relaxing but also very time consuming. Now i use a sewing machine i am still slightly scared of it but not so much anymore. Anyway i don't know what kind of quilts you would want to make. maybe if i get a chance i can put some of the pictures of my quilts up if you want to see them. just let me know what you want to know. feel free to pm me if you want to.

I learned quilt making through a club, but it's really not that hard imo. Can you use a machine? If not, you should probably learn, as it takes so very long without it. If you have any quilting stores in your area, they probably have some kind of block of the month set up, where you can come in, talk to other quilters, and get detailed instructions on how to make different blocks. If you want to teach yourself, get a book about a kind of quilt that you would be really excited to make, and won't take an age to finish, so that you won't lose interest before it's done. I wouldn't worry so much about the difficulty; I teach a 4-H quilting club, which is girls abes 9-17, and they can usually make beautiful quilts after a couple of smaller projects and a little practice with the machine, so I'm shure you'll do just fine!

One bit of advice - if you're not planing on appliqueing your quilt, buy a rotery cutter, quilting ruler, and mat; cutting goes SO much faster that way!
