  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Yes, as stated, that was the first miracle He ever performed.

Also, which part of the text leads you to believe that His mother had to be asking Him to perform a miraculous work in this case?

Thanks!

John 2:4

English Standard Version (ESV)

4 And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.”

Earlier in the chapter it shows the context as in timing of the occurence.

Yes of course that is the part of the story i was referring to tigger45, thank you.

Thanks for the welcome David.

still not feeling Ive gotten to the bottom of this. maybe i wont be able to.
I'm definitely not trying to say this wasnt his first, I have always held to that view in fact. But just as I was discussing it with a friend last night and the bit about it being "the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee" (esv) ie the launching of his stuff in this area, the launching of his public ministry, and something to begin revealing his glory manifest to others and his disciples. after all is didnt say his mum began to believe in him at that time but just his disciples. and his mum being so sure he would do something which might be the case if she had seen him do things before.

Can anyone read the original greek and see if it necessarily infers it is his first sign? or is it more loose perhaps as the english translations may seem to be?

I mean could jesus at 12yo- "in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47 And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers." esv
be seen as a miracle? something that could not be done unless by through the holy spirit?

Thanks for your help here

This is how a Greek interlinear worded John 2:11 in the english.

This did beinning of the signs - Jesus in Cana - of Galilee and revealed the glory of Him and believed on Him the disciples of Him.

John 2:4 coupled with 2:11 gives us the timing of His first miracle. Plus think of it this way. If Mary the mother of Jesus wanted Him to perform miracles at an earlier age don't you think she would make Him change His own diapers? :{)
