  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

*sigh* I hate to rain on the parade, but in the preface to the 1956 (I think that was year. Or was it 65?) edition of LOTR - FOTR Tolkien SPECIFICALLY says that the book was not written as an allegory of any religion of any type. While I agree that his being Catholic influenced his writing, the actual book is not meaning to portray say, for example, the devil, fallen angels, etc.

I just finished reading all three LOTR, as well as the Hobbit again. Maybe it's time for me to attack the Silmarilion and actually make it through. I've tried three times before, and just never quite made it! :p

Yes, as allegory, but Tolkein in one of his letters goes through a huge tackling of the word allegory and what it means. In another one of his letters to his son, he explains that the books were written from a clearly Catholic/Christian perspective. He viewed his books as a "foreshadowing" of Christianity, a prelude as it were, before Christ's arrival into the world. It is true he did not intend to have his characters portray Jesus, or Mary or the saints, but he did write them with a Christian ideal in mind.
