We have all learned about Fig Leaf Religion and the term has a very definite meaning. If someone wants to define the meaning of Fig Leaf Religion I am sure that would edify us. However I want to talk about the actual Fig Leaves that Adam and Eve sowed together to cover themselves with. I want to take a look at the history of clothing.

First of all the history of clothing is very difficult because clothing just does not preserve very well. The only exception to that are the bogs in England. There we have evidence of clothing that goes back maybe 20,000 years. Although we have artifacts of sewing needles that goes back about 45,000 years. This is when man first started to migrate north out of Africa. It could be he was able to make clothing so he could survive the colder climate that Neanderthal was living in before the Modern Humans began to migrate into their area in the Middle East. The Arab Continental Plate. The area that someday will be the New Jerusalem. Abraham walked the fertile crescent and this is the land that God gave to Abraham's descendants.

In the Bible we know that the effort of Adam and Eve to cover themselves was not working out for them very well. Tradition says they sowed fig leaves together. According to science people have been making clothing out of fiber for a long time. They made clothing back then a lot the way we make clothing now only we have machinery now and they had to do it by hand. There is talk about the virtuous women and her ability to make clothing to protect her family in the winter. We are told to find a wife that has the skills and ability to cloth her children. To provide for the needs of her household.

In the sermon on the mount Matthew 6:28 Jesus says: "And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin." So we see in the Bible if you want clothing it takes labor to spin the fiber into thread then you have to weave the thread into a cloth and they would color the cloth and sow it into clothing. You can make clothing out of the fiber from the fig tree. It is not very warm and it does not hold up much better then paper. It is more for a ceremony or celebration. More for looks and for show. (Note: Jesus we are told had clothing that the Romans Guards gambled over. Because his clothing was one piece and not actually sowed together but weaved together.)

Fig leaf religion is all glitter & glamour and no substance. All for show but nothing enduring. Nothing to keep you warm on a cold night. Nothing of any substance to protect you from the elements. So God provided something better for Adam and Eve and Jesus tells us not to worry because God will provide for us what we need.

One final note: clothing is symbolic in the Bible. When we talk about the wedding garment of the bride of Christ and how she will be without spot, blemish or wrinkle this is a reference to the flesh. We need to be washed and cleansed in the Precious Blood of Jesus. There is no other way other then the Blood. Adam & Eve's fig leaf religion did not give them what they needed. God provided them with clothing and God found a way for them to go.

Lot's of meaning in that story. Mainly that the sacrifice of Christ was represented by the 'skins' that God 'provided', that were much more enduring than the covering of leaves they made for themselves, and surely made from the skin of a 'lamb without blemish'.
