When Fidel dies, Cuba will become State #51 inside the USA.

Yeah right... the first ones that want an independent Cuba are all the old Cuban "political refugees" in the USA that left Cuba because they were rubbing shoulders with the last dictator. Then they'll want to go in and grab the political power to own their Cuba. I shure hope Fidel leaves a competent and worthy successor.

Back to the 51st state... Cuba has higher probability of becoming #51 than Puerto Rico does. (Thank God)

The Cubans who initialy left when Fidel came into power were the rich with ties to Batista (the US-approved dictator of Cuba). Fidel came into power and all their money and influence was at risk. Of course, the first thing they did when geting to Florida was badmouth Fidel as an unjust, cruel, mean, puppy-kicking, tyrant.

Cubans aren't dying of hunger. They aren't fat like Americans and dying from obesety, but they aren't dying of hunger.

Cubans aren't dying from sickness. Doctors aren't millionares driving European cars, but health care is free for all Cubans.

Cubans aren't ignorant idiots. Cuban schools and universities are world renowned for the students and professionals they produce. They aren't the average Yo-Mama-College-For-Poor-Kids. Many Americans have traveled to Cuba to get cured from diseases that American doctors couldn't even begin to cure.

And about the "Iron Grip over his people" bit, the Cuban Government deals with people it deems a threat. The United States does the same thing. France does the same thing. UK does the same thing. Japan does the same thing. What do you think the USA has been doing to the "enemy combatants" it has held for the past 4 years without a single trial? (Or since it is Americans doing it, it's declared OK?)

And uba has good tobacco that may not be good for you but is actually quite pleasure inducing! I mean the cigarettes of course. EVen if you don't smoke they are worth a try if you can get some!

I really don't know enough about Cuba... but the points that have been made about univeral health care and education are important ones. In some ways, Cuba is a far more humane society than the American one where over 40,000,000 (greater than the entire population of Canada) have no health insurance.

Is Castro perfect? No, probably not. I think that it is wrong, for instance, that he agreed to go along with the missle project... but that too is a two-way street and I understand the pressures that he was under. As someone has pointed out, look around at other world leaders and the number of deaths that they are responsible for. How many innocent people died in Vietnam and Iraq as a result of American Presidential decisions? How many Americans have been put to death by their government in the last 50 years? I am opposed to capital punishment and war but if you ask me who I would rather be governed by, Castro or any of the recent American Presidents or Canadian PrimeMinisters, I will choose Castro every time.

What makes you think that Cubans are brainwashed beyond the capacity to think independently but somehow you and your fellow Americans have escaped the American propaganda machine and managed to maintain you capacity for critical thought?

What Universities are people around the world going to, Cuba or the US? The US. Where are people from around the world getting treatment? In the US.

So Cuba is okay because his people aren't starving to death? The same things you said about Cubans apply to prisoners. It is really amazing how people will always mention food and health when it comes to communism. As though, "Well, they have no freedom, but they still eat and have shacks to live in!".

The country is still terribly mismanaged and the people's don't have the basic freedoms given to most people on Earth. This is inexcusable. These people are denied the right to a government of their choosing, the right to express themselves, the right to live where they desire, the right to have a job of their choosing, the right to self-determination and even the move and travel to other nations.
They are prisoners of Castro. You can tell me how great a prison is because it has free healthcare, food, housing, but it doesn't mean squat because they aren't free.

Seriously, don't people in the US WONDER why they are the only country in the world banned from travelling to Cuba??? They have millions of tourists and groups that go all the time! (ie: Pastors for Peace, Venceremos Brigade) This goes against your Constitutional right to of movement, folks!

Canada has always maintained a close relationship with Cuba. Why, the largest annual Terry Fox run held yearly outside of Canada is in Cuba!!

Okay - Cigars....Canadians can bring back to Canada 50 Cigars per person! So when I go to Cuba with my hubbie, 100 cigars. MonteCristos are about 25$ Canadian here, but 1$ US in Cuba! But the Rum you buy there is probably THE BEST ever!

And no Cubans have health insurance. Americans have the freedom to spend their money how they want and to select a job with a healthcare program. For those that can't afford it, they will be under medicaid and receive treatment.

Let's see, here in the US we have freedom of the press, no domestic government media, laws against news monopolies and access to global media.
In Cuba free press is outlawed and all media is controled by the state. There is no access to global media.

American propaganda machine and brainwashing? Hardly. As was said in another topic, how does the US government indoctrinate me when it has no domestic media source and completely free press? How can it be argued that Cuba, which outlaws all media except that which is controlled by the state is somehow superior?

I'm free to listen to Cuba's media, visit their websites, etc. Are Cubans allowed to see our media or other media? Absolutely not.

Whoa, wait a second, you mean to tell me tourist spend US dollars in Cuba? I thought they were a communist paradise?

The Cuban government, despite all the propaganda otherwise, has an addiction to US currency.

It would only take an act of Congress to make PR a US state. As I'm sure you recall, nearly half of the people living there wanted to be a state in the last vote, about 1% less than those that wanted to remain a terrority (while 1% of the people wanted total independence).

Funny, here I thought the US was imperialist but won't make PR a state even when nearly half the people there support it.

Cuban money is a bit like 'company' money factories used to pay their workers instead of real money, to spend in company stores. People will always prefer real money, even in a communist state where everyone's needs are supposedly met..

Ummm...Cuba is not a communist country. That is an oxymoron! Noone is saying it is a paradise, but to hear people of the US spout propaganda is almost beyond ridiculous!

They have democracy, I posted a link.

Of course the people were banned from using that money. I dont see many people in the US using Canadian currency!

The US has never been imperialist in the true sense of the word (in the 17th-20th Century). We never went out to other nations and took them over from the natives in order to exploit their labor and resources.
