  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Do you believe that we should tell them that what they believe/do is wrong?

No-it is none of our business.

Should we try and change their culture just because we think that it is wrong? Why or why not?

No. Because, as often in most cases, this goes both ways. I don't like it when foreigners (i.e. Osama bin Laden et. al) tell me what I do is "wrong" and try to force their opinions on me, so I see no reason to try to impose and force my opinions and culture onto other countries. It is wrong when Osam bin Laden tries to force his opinions (remember he firmly believes that he is "right" and we are infidels), and so it would also be wrong for us to force our views onto other countries.

Seriously right now I don't know what scuptures I would use off the top of my head. I really first just looked into the situation and was reading about what they were actually doing to these girls and it happens when they are like thirteen. They do a lot of horiffic things that I dare not talk about. I believe that they are really mutilating them it is not circumscion at all.

I don't know why we are circumcised for it was part of the covenant with Abraham and frankly from my understanding we are not under the Abrahamic Covenant but under the covenant of the blood of Jesus Christ. The New Covenant not with our blood but his. So therefore circumsion is no longer necessary but if you want to do it hey I haven't really spent much time on thinking about it or studying it in the Bible we never asked that question in Bible college most of us are still working out Christian living and good theology but that is why I like this website because it makes me think about everyones question's not just my own and that streches me.

Though Paul does talk about how are bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit and furthermore we are made in the image of God thus cutting and mutilating our bodies is not something that should be done whatsoever (1 Cor 3:16, 1 Cor 6:19-20, 2 Cor 6:16).

Bottome line the spirit of the Lord is the one who convicts and I would bring these scripture, the ones above, to them once they are converted through the power of God it would be Jesus who would change them for he would show them their sins through the Holy Spirit and teach them to walk in newness of life not after the ways of the flesh but after the Spirit and in his likeness.
I was relating circucision because it was something commanded by God for the Hebrews - Israelites and Jews. How can we tell these people it is wrong when we have something similar in our Bible. In no way was i suggesting they are exactly alike or that we as Christians use circumcision today. sorry for the confusion. And i wasnt stating a side so much i guess as just questioning it myself. It is hard for me to judge another culture when our own religion has something somewhat similar in its past (in scripture).

Huh? The foreskin has plentiful nerve endings, particularly on the inner part. It's pretty darn sensitive - far from being "plain" skin. Not to mention its function of protecting the part which does have the highest concentration of nerves.
But its function is to protect the tip of the penis, while the tip itself's function is to enhance pleasure. The foreskin does not have anywhere near the amount of nerves. FGM, as it was said earlier removes either a part of the [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] or the whole thing. Because of this, FGM goes waaayyy beyond circumcision.

Besides, if the foreskin adds so much pleasure that it was of real concern, why would God command that it be removed? I can't imagine He'd be willing to short change His chosen people that much. He's not a killjoy.

(And yes, I know the reasons why He commanded that Jewish boys be circumcised.)

Nevertheless, the principle is the same: mutilation without consent.

If I sneak into your house one night and chop off a finger, are you just going to wake up and just say "well, I'm glad he didn't take my whole hand"?

Why did God in the OT order wholescale extermination of millions, and the rape/pillage of countless others? He does plenty of things that don't exactly make sense.

Either way, it's undeniable that the foreskin greatly facilitates sex for both the man and the woman.

I am not for it. It is far more disfiguring and causes more suffering and dysfunction than male circumcision. I am sure they have seen the pain and suffering it causes, yet they continue the practice. I don't think "telling" them will make any difference to whether they continue the practice or not.

I honestly can't see the similarities between male circumcision and female genital mutilation.

The circumcision of a male during infancy does not affect him in later life. He can still have and enjoy sex.

Female genital mutilation is often done to keep women under the control of a men by causing them not to enjoy sex. It can involve injury or entire removal of the [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] and labia and narrowing of the vagina, not to mention the many health risks that male circumcision doesn't.

These are two completely different situations.

No, I don't think anyone should have the right to do this to a baby or young girl when they have no ability to speak for themselves. But, at the same time I don't know how we would even go about stopping other countries from doing this.

But, why does a man actually need his foreskin? He doesn't need it to enjoy sex, women do need a [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse]. Chopping off someone's hand or finger really isn't the same as foreskin...you actually need and use your hand to live a normal life.

I honestly don't see the logic behind that, as we WANT women to enjoy themselves as much as possible when they are with us.

Firstly, why do women need a [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse]? Other parts of the female genetalia provide pleasurable sensations as well.

Secondly, I know a number of people with missing fingers who manage to lead normal lives. How exactly would losing a knuckle off of the top of your left pinky affect your life?

It's not an issue of needing a foreskin, it's that no one has the right to cut someone else's off for no apparent reason.

Actually, the question should be "Why does a man need his foreskin removed?" And the answer is, "He doesn't."

The function of the [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] is to provide sexual pleasure.

A person can lead a normal life without a hand, but the loss of a hand or limb will no doubt make life harder. Just the everyday things we do like driving a car would be more difficult with only one hand.

There are actually benefits to circumcision. Why not do it? Every man I've ever talked to in real life says he is glad it was done and most certainly wouldn't want to go through it during adulthood. Babies don't remember it, they benefit from it later in life. Just seems better to do it on a baby than a 20 year old.

What, the G-spot?

From what I hear, that's the only other part that can compare to the [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] when it comes to providing pleasure. And from what I hear, hitting that constantly is near impossible.

BTW, this is coming from someone who has zero experience.

Why don't we remove everyone's teeth as a method of cavity prevention while we're at it? Dentures for all! The true benefits of circumcision are very minimal - and there's still the nasty little issue of whacking off part of a person's body without their consent. If circumcision were so great, believe me, it'd be a common thing. Yet, somehow, out of all the nations on the earth considered "medically advanced," the US is the only place where it is still routinely performed.

And, you know, there are actually benefits to having a foreskin.

Gentlemen, if you really want to discuss circumcision, why don't you start a thread on that topic? To compare circumscision to FGM is outrageous! To declare that they are comparable is disgusting!

If they were comparable, boys of about 11 or 12 would be one day grabbed on the street by family and friends, have their pants pulled down, on the street, and then someone (a father or a male relative) would use a piece of glass or metal to cut off most of the penis. A few stitches might be taken to help stop the bleeding, which might also make urination impossible, depending upon where the stitches are made, in which case the stitches would have to be ripped out and reapplied in a few days. There is no medicine for infection, no pain medication no sanitary conditions and no sympathy of compassion. And when the times comes for his arranged marriage to be planned, the boy may be inspected by representatives of the girl's family to ensure that he will not be able to enjoy sex and therefore will be less inclined stray from the marital bed.
If that was how circumsicions were done, then, yes, cirssumcision and FGM would be comparable.

Guys, your penises are not at the center of the universe and they have nothing to do with the subject of FGM.

 God gave us a [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] and it has more pleasure nerve endings than anywhere else in our reproductive tract, so it was put there to enable us to enjoy sexual intimacy to the fullest! It's not just a redundant skin fold.

I'm pretty sure that the circumcision thing started off as a consent issue comparison. It's not my intent to in any way legitimatize FGM or to say that circumcision is equally brutal and/or distressing to most people on whom it is performed. It is my intent to say that cutting off a piece of someone else's body without their permission is wrong, no matter how you slice it.

Oh, and for the record, my statement about women needing a [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] was rhetorical in nature. I'm a big fan of them myself. ;) And I'm entirely aware that the rest of the vulva is not nearly as much fun for most women.
