  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Why on earth are they remaking it? Is the general population in America so dull that they wont be able to enjoy a film if it's not about one of their main sports?

Pretty much...the movie industry seems to have no originality left. No one is interested in making a movie unless it's a sequel, a remake, or based on a popular book/comicbook.

You're telling me you'd go watch a American Football or Baseball movie? I mean if you had a choice of seeing a few other comedies as well?

It seems normal to adapt certain things to match the market it's being sold in. Most americans (and Canadians too) don't really care much for soccer, so not a ton of people would really want to see it. It makes sense that if they change the sport to one of the more popular sports, more people would go see it. More people seeing it = more money.

I for one though, would have enjoyed it as Arsenal - I like soccer more than baseball and it's steroids. I play both in mens leagues, by the way, so don't jump on me for being biased or something. I also happened to like the original "Mean Machine" that's being remade into "The Longest Yard". I'll prolly go see TLY, but I suspect that MM will be better anyways.

I've seen Any Given Sunday, Remember the Titans, Bill Durham and many more. I would obviously make my choice based on reviews, who starred and who directed the film.

Soccer is apparently the biggest participation sport in America for children. Don't moviemakers think that that these kids are growing up yet still retaining their interest in soccer? I can understand them tweaking the jokes since a lot of british humour is quite deadpan and frankly goes over the heads of most of your 'Friends' audiences who need to be smacked in the face with a joke to find it funny. But hey, I just have a bee in my bonnet about remakes etc :sorry:

Well, granted, those are great films. But I'm just talking about comedies - American humour is vastly inferior to British humour for the most part and if *I* had the choice, I wouldn't bother watching an American comedy if a British one was also showing.

A lot of those kids play it for the activity levels. Most have no clue about the English Premier League, the Bundisliga (sp), etc... Soccer is an extremely cheap sport to play, so for parents looking to get their kids active, that's what they sign them up for.

Valid point on the Friends comment :p I can't stand the show for the most part because of the stupid humour (though Joey makes me crack up most of the time) - one of my favorite comedies on TV is "My Family", a decidedly British comedy :p And one of my favorite movies is "Shaun of the Dead". I love the deadpan humour and subtle jokes slipped in for attentive viewers.
