I'm sorry for the introduction forum. I've been having a hard time navigating the site. My apologies. My friends and I have been away from the church for well over a decade. We agree now a return to the church is necessary. I don't even remember my prayers other than the Father's prayer. It's odd to see some others returning at the same time. I suppose we've lost a lot, but I don't see that as my reasoning. I'm confused on where to start.

I live across the street from my old parish. But I no longer know anyone there.

Welcome to Christian forums. It is great that you are returning back to the things of God. You are right to infer that there is no sense in worrying about what you might have lost. The father in the prodigal son, had no such worries either. In your heart you likely never left. Regardless, I hope you can find acceptance but even more importantly, I hope you can find a place where you can learn and grow in the things of God. God bless.

I've moved recently to a new city. I don't know anyone at any of the parishes. And Covid 19 is making a mess of establishing ties to a local parish.

Try these things in no particular order:
Pray from the heart.
Read the Bible.
Find and read the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
Find out if they offer adoration across the street and sneak in.
Sneak in for a daily mass.
Sneak in for a Sunday mass if you are not otherwise at high risk of Covid 19.
Watch mass online if you cannot attend for health reasons.
Ask the priest to come and bless your house.
Go to confession and dump it all out on the priest. You will feel great once you do.
Keep talking with your friends, as it seems something good is happening among them.

It's wonderful that you remember the Father's prayer and would like to go back to Church. I'm glad you decided to join the Christian Forums and found the Outreach section. You may also enjoy fellowship in the following sections: CF Community Life, Leisure & Society, and Recovery.

I understand that you had been a Catholic but now you do not want to go for confession to a pastor. You still need to confess and seek forgiveness from God and anyone that you have hurt (unless apologizing causes more harm to them). Sometimes it also helps the conscience to confess to friends or pastors. Remember that Lord Jesus said:

Mat 5:23 So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.

If you join a Protestant church, you will not have to confess to a pastor. You said your mother is Lutheran. You can join her church or any other denomination. God loves you and He will be waiting for you with open arms wherever you decide to go:

Luke 15:20 So he got up and went to his father. But while the son was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion. He ran, threw his arms around his neck, and kissed him.

Thank you. I feel lost, and your words have been inspiring. I ask forgiveness everyday, and I still spill tears daily. I dont know why I'm here. I can't tell whether I'm asking for help or if I'm the devil incarnate.

My wife has woken up numerous times to me making mocking faces from dreams in which I was teasing the devil. Who has recurring dreams of the devil?.... And isn't the least bit afraid?

How does one repent?

You know what's really crazy? I have a gnostic bible, satanic bible, koran, morman bible, Buddhist and Hindu texts, a necronomicon, a Swedish bible from the early 1800s, and who knows what else. I still have my original bible homewrapped in black duct tape because I was afraid of what would happen to me if I was caught reading it. In the US. In public school. I still have that bible in its black duct tape cover... Worn to pieces... I hide it from my wife. She's against stuff like that. She insisted getting married outside of the church. I read her scripture now and there, but I think it's just lullabies in the end.

Repenting is changing your mind from unbelief to belief.

Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God. Romans 10:17

The best way to get faith is by hearing (or reading) the Word of God.

If that is a stumbling block for you (still), you could start with watching sermons.

The more of the Word of God the preacher uses, the better it is for your faith (in it, in Jesus).

I love the changing your mind part. To me, that is reality. Watching sermons though? How is that different from an alan watts session? And don't get me wrong, I love sermons, and Alan Watts.

The difference is that in sermons you will hear parts of the Word of God, whereby faith is begotten. I was answering your question "how does one repent?". By renewing your mind, and that by the Word of God.

If you prefer reading that is okay, perhaps even better, though it poses the question, what you should read. The same question can be asked for what sermons to watch though.

But yes, I found God through watching sermons. So I definitely endorse it.

How does one repent?
"Repentance is the activity of reviewing one's actions and feeling contrition or regret for past wrongs, which is accompanied by commitment to and actual actions that show and prove a change for the better. In Judaism and Christianity it is often defined as an action, turning away from self-serving activities and turning to God, to walk in His ways." The following article is useful:

Repentance - Wikipedia

You know what's really crazy? I have a gnostic bible, satanic bible, koran, morman bible, Buddhist and Hindu texts, a necronomicon,
You have to destroy these books. You cannot repent or be blessed while holding on to evil possessions.

Living with someone who is anti-Christian is a big challenge for you, especially when she doesn't allow you to read the Bible. Why is she so hostile against Christianity?

> How does one define God? And if you can't, how can you be sure you're right? <

How do you define God? Everyone has a definition for God. Even atheists they have a definition for the god they reject.

> I wouldn't consider Buddhism a religion. Thus one can be Christian and Buddhist at the same time. <

My understanding is that Oriental people consider Buddhism a religion by adding to it local animistic beliefs in Theravada and Vajrayana or by adding more sophisticated cosmology in Mahayana. Westerners believe only in Buddhist philosophy and think they can be Christians at the same time. I respect Buddhism as a pre-Christian religion: a philosophy devised to explain human existence until eternal Truth became embodied in the person of Jesus.

The Buddha lowered the status of Hindu gods in favor of an unknown ultimate reality that he could not describe. We Christians know that the ultimate reality is the God described in the Bible.

The Buddha believed that suffering is the ultimate evil. That attachment to the world is the root of evil. And that people did not have a permanent identity. Christianity believes that God creates and loves the world and that we also need to love and care for the world, even if we suffer in this endeavor. Our self / identity is to be nourished and made holy in the manner of God so that it could have eternal life. We do not deny our "ego" but reform it by renouncing selfishness with the power of the Spirit of God.

> The gospel of Thomas is my favorite gospel, but it's discounted. Why? Because it was found in 1945. <

I like the Gospel of Thomas, myself. In fact a large portion is taken verbatim from Matthew's Gospel. The Bible, being truthful, does not mean that all writing outside the Bible is a lie. But, of course, everything that contradicts the Bible is a lie.

> The bible hasn't clarified. The bible discombobulates. Which bible should I read? Those who seek shall find. Well, I'm seeking. <

It's great that you're seeking. You should read a modern English translation with good footnotes that explain the text. But again, where would you read the Bible when you can't read at home?

Mat 7:7-8 “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

Sounds like a lot of fingers in a lot of pies. Because you hope one is right out of them all or...?
If you want God then he is found in the Bible, the others I believe are all the doctrine of demons meant to confuse and muddy.
There is one path which we travel to God. But off that path are many other paths, but I don't believe they lead to the same place, those other paths are paths to ruin.
Matthew 7:13-14

13 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.
I would suggest having at least two Bibles, a new King James and either an NIV or New English version and read the New Testament. I also like a third, the Old King James. I find having three helps with understanding. Read and pray.

I just want to say that my wife is totally fine with the bible. It was growing up with the bible that had me wrap it in black so nobody would know. My wife actually enjoys me reading her scripture. She is just cautious about things like that. I actually had a talk with her recently in which I pointed out that she shied away from my saying anything against the bible, yet she shies away from the bible itself. She's on the fence, it seems. Agnostic with Catholic upbringing.

I have other bibles and religious texts because it's an interest of mine. It doesnt mean I follow those religions. To burn those texts serves nothing; I feel I would fare just as well burying my head in sand.

I like collecting various bibles. And I had a study bible gifted to me, which I am thankful for and refer to quite often. It just is difficult for me to believe in only the bible when there are so many related texts throughout the earth. I feel they must be connected somehow.

However, I'm just a man, prone to mistakes. Like all of us.

Well trust broken is hard to fix. It is much like Humpty Dumpty, if you understand that reference. Breaking confidentiality is a broken trust. I have had to depart ways with those I held once as friends due to the falling apart of trust. When a person over a period of time erodes a trust it is a problem in continuing a relationship.

That said, it does not mean we can never trust another but I would be cautious in entering another relationship in what I would share. One should probably only share their closest secrets with those who have earned trust. You can certainly share your innermost with Christ. He can speak into your life just as anyone else.

In terms of religion though there are those who have a religious affiliation with some entity, including Christ. And then there are those who have a relationship with Christ. They know Him and more importantly He knows them. He is a certainty. You can know Him in that way. In your search He will reveal Himself to you, that is His promise to man. May your search be fruitful and result in knowing.

Its weird because trust has been brought up to me a lot through councillors. I apparently put complete trust in people I dont know, and I shy away with sharing anything with people I know.

Thanks for your kind words, by the way, I forgot to mention that.

I'm not sure who you refer to as breaking my trust. My wife saved me, if anything. She saved me from addiction, and I put her through a lot, regrettably. That is, if you refer to my wife. I am unsure. We've been together 10 years now.

I guess I have trouble knowing Christ because I never knew the guy. My interpretation differs of what Christ means. God the son, to me, refers to knowing oneself. The acts through god reflect the Holy spirit. The father is the god of gods.

Does that make sense? Again, I'm only seeking, and I don't want to walk the wrong path. I'm not trying to be antagonistic. I'm told I come off that way often.

Praise God you are returning to Christ. Although I am not Roman Catholic, it seems that you are returning to the Lord there. I would follow the advice of Catholic posters here & there is the Catholic: One Bread One Body forum in CF, see: One Bread, One Body - Catholic
