  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I am glad that some people are still aware and sickened by abortion. It seems like most people (including myself) have become numb in certain degrees to this horrible sin.

Now show me in Scripture where it says that we edify others by speaking in tongues without interpretation?

First off, don't confuse speaking in tongues in a church setting with speaking in tongues as a prayer language. And second, can you please give me the verse that says how we are edified? Or is it possible that someone could feel sick while they're praying, feel that it's for someone and later find out that person was experiencing the exact same feelings and were suddenly healed? Personally that would edify me. So again

show me in Scripture where it says how we are edified, and that it's the same for everyone

The scripture doesn't actually say how we are edified through the speaking of devotional tongues. We just are. We are also edified by praying in English, studying the Bible, going to church, fellowshiping with other Christians, etc. Do we need to know exactly how we are edified by these? I think that the question hasn't been asked of these things because people know that their faith is built up by doing these things.

Does not knowing how your car's engine works stop you from using it? Do you need a manual to show you how every component of your refrigerator or washing machine works before you will use it? I know that I am using natural logic here but you get the message, don't you?

I think you missed my point in relation to the post I quoted.

Did say that?
NO

I am saying that God reveals things to Christians by revelation.

Read Ephesians 1:17.

If you are bound to the letter of the Word, you are bound to a dead letter. God's Spirit working in us makes the written Word understandable to us. This is revelation.

We all know that the minds of unsaved people are darkened, and it took a revelation of God's love for us in Christ to make us see that we needed to give our lives to Christ. Many non Christians have read the written Bible yet not have accepted Christ. Why? If the written Word has powers of its own, then everyone who reads it would be converted instantly!

Such is not the case in reality, is it.....?
There needs to be a revelation of Christ before a person can be saved. Our eyes were enlightened by the Holy Spirit and we responded to the revelation.

This is the same with the baptism in the Holy Spirit and explains why so many Christians have never entered into it. They are stuck in the written Word which is a dead letter.

We need the spirit of revelation in the knowledge of Him to be able to understand what the gifts are and how they can benefit us.

Brother, if you haven't got that revelation yet, and are happy with where you are, and not prepared to seek God for any further revelation of His truth other than what you read in the written text, then you are quite free to go and do your thing. God bless you.

But don't put the rest of us down because we seek a closer walk with God through revelation of His truth to make the Scriptures alive to us.

But what you are saying Oscarr is that YOUR belief in tongues comes from a revelation that is given secondary from the word of God. CORRECT?

Read This...

2 For the person who speaks in another language is not speaking to men but to God, since no one understands him; however, he speaks mysteries in the Spirit. 3 But the person who prophesies speaks to people for edification, encouragement, and consolation. 4 The person who speaks in another language builds himself up, but he who prophesies builds up the church. 5 I wish all of you spoke in other languages, but even more that you prophesied. The person who prophesies is greater than the person who speaks in languages, unless he interprets so that the church may be built up.
6 But now, brothers, if I come to you speaking in other languages(TONGUES), how will I benefit you unless I speak to you with a revelation or knowledge or prophecy or teaching? (notice tongues is not mentioned)
7 Even inanimate things producing sounds--whether flute or harp--if they don't make a distinction in the notes, how will what is played on the flute or harp be recognized?
8 In fact, if the trumpet makes an unclear sound, who will prepare for battle?
9 In the same way, unless you use your tongue for intelligible speech, how will what is spoken be known? For you will be speaking into the air.
10 There are doubtless many different kinds of languages in the world, and all have meaning.
11 Therefore, if I do not know the meaning of the language, I will be a foreigner to the speaker, and the speaker will be a foreigner to me.
12 So also you--since you are zealous in matters of the spirit, seek to excel in building up the church. (The purpose of all the Gifts)
13 Therefore the person who speaks in another language should pray that he can interpret.
14 For if I pray in another language, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.
