We went through "A Purpose Driven Life" as a church 2 years ago and last year we went through "The Purpose Driven Church." The Visioning Task Force read through "The Missional Church" last year (he was kind enough to tell us that several seminaries use it as a text book). Our pastor also had the church elders read "Irresistible Influence" this past fall. All were excellent books with many ideas. Do all of the ideas fit our church, absolutely not. Were we able to adapt some? A few. What they really did was spark the imaginative juices. The result of that was incredible. We now have several outwardly focuses ministries with several others just waiting for a leader to come forward. Is it lazy to use them, no way. I can think of several times when a pastor, a teacher, or a parent suggested something and until I heard it from another source I did not find it credible. "The Purpose Driven Life" is simply a tool that your pastor is using. Good luck and enjoy the book.

Because of Him,

My pastor has requested that everyone read the Purpose Driven Life. He plans to use the accompanying workbook for weekly Bible Study over the next couple weeks.

Is this being lazy?
Lazy, in what way? Because he is asking the church to read and is using the work book? These are simply tools your pastor is using to teach the body of Christ. I'm sure he has probably already been through the program and is only trying to help.

BTW, I have used materials of this type in my own churches.

God Bless,

Mike

I don't think it's being lazy. I often use pre-packaged materials. Why? So I can devote time to other things like visitation, sermon preparation, prayer, prayer and prayer. There is no sense in reinventing the wheel when it's not necessary. Having written my own material as well, it takes a lot of time and effort. It can pull you away from family, etc.

Are people having an issue with his using this? If so, I would just gently remind them that God has gifted many people in the body with writing skills, etc. and we would be foolish to just rely on ourselves.

Thanks for the replies and insight. First, I want to make it clear that I wasnt accusing my pastor of being lazy.
In working with the men of my church I developed a couple servant leader sessions based on the book Servant Leader by Ken Blanchard. But I molded the ideas and concepts of the book to fit our specific goals and resources.
In contrast to that, there is no tweeking regarding purpose driven life.

If I'm out in left field (again) please let me know but I think there should be some adjustments made to the workbook if its to be applied to a group or congregation.

I get what you are saying. The workbook is fairly "generic" in that it would apply to most believers in various situations and wouldn't require a lot of customization to apply to a large audience. I would probably use the workbook as it is rather than change parts of it and then add other things on top of what was already there. To use a cooking metaphor, I would not change the ingredients but would use local illustrations and situations to "season" the broth.

For instance, we used the standard out-of-the-box small group videos and discussion guides. People will naturally discuss how it applies locally. There were many other things that went along with the "system" that were locally created (prayer meetings, ministry fairs, etc).
