The men were arrested last week when the FBI raided the building in southwest Washington and have been charged with impersonating federal officers. Prosecutors said the agents found body armor, gas masks, zip ties, handcuffs, equipment to break through doors, drones, radios and police training manuals during a search of five apartments in the building.

Why do you the guys who tricked Secret Service agents and have provided the aforementioned items have been released on bail? Most people don't realize how corrupt are government officials are, and just how many have little concern for the welfare of the people. A good bet is that these guys have ties to Iran, and the administration is making a deal with Iran and does not want to make waves. State Department officials, whether Republican or Democrat, make horrible deals for America but then can boast that they made a deal. The administration continues to use Russia, despite their genocide, as a broker for a nuclear deal with Iran. This is why an outsider, whether it be a Perot or a Trump, is so unwelcome in Washington D.C.--because they have the potential to actually negotiate and put America first in the negotiations. In a real negotiation you have to be willing to walk a way if the other side won't compromise.

Because they are US citizens not foreign nationals?
LOL My mistake. No, U.S. citizenship makes them even more subject to our laws instead of deportation. Do you think it is unreasonable to hold them?

No idea mate, I'm not a judge in your country. I'd have to read the full decision to make any kind of judegment.

The summary from the article you linked seems reasonable though:

U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael Harvey had intensely questioned prosecutors about the case in a hearing that spanned over three days. He ultimately decided on Tuesday that he would release the men on Wednesday, subjecting them to supervision that includes GPS monitoring.

Harvey agreed to stay his order until Wednesday morning while the government decides whether to appeal. The judge pointed out that the charge is not a violent crime and neither of the men faces a significant prison sentence, if they are convicted. He said there have been “significantly worse and more dangerous impersonation cases.”

There may have been in our nation's history, but as an analogy you don't let out a murderer because there have been worse murders. They found illegal high-capacity magazines for Taherzadeh’s Sig Sauer 229 and Ali’s Glock 19, they were trying to gift the First Lady's agent. You know, they have arrested January 6 people who were motioned into the Capitol and allowed in by the Capitol police and committed no acts of violence or mayhem. And it sounds like Taherzadeh and Ali were tipped off before arrested by the FBI. This is a serious case of breach of national security. One of their passports was stamped with a visa for Iran.

It's called the Bail Reform Act. It limits the use of pre-trial detention to those that are flight risks, committed violent crimes, or are a danger to others.

They have ankle monitors (per your own posting), certainly have had their passports taken, have not been accused of violent crimes, and the judge doesn't seem to think they are some sort of outstanding violent threat (at least now that their guns have been seized).

If you want to see the various documents posted on the case see the docket here:

Docket for United States v. TAHERZADEH, 1:22-mj-00076 - CourtListener.com

The transcript for the case isn't uploaded yet, but it might be later tomorrow.

As for the Jan 6 defendants. Almost 800 have been arrested, and of the 550 still awaiting trial, only about 40 are in the DC jail and a dozen or two elsewhere. All of those fit the categories listed above: history of violence, violent crime charged, flight risk. (About 100 of those cases are for assaulting officers, so even some of the persons with charged violence aren't in jail.)

This same magistrate judge has made similar rulings on so many of them. (There are only a couple magistrate judges and they handle all of the initial cases.)

Taherzadeh and Ali will have a trial judge set soon and detention will certainly be revisited.

These folks were working with some pretty pricey real estate and equipment. Gifting folks ARs let alone $40,000/yr. penthouses would cause me a wee bit of a financial problem. I wonder how they finance it? Follow the money.
