  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I just wanted to quickly point out a distinction between generic 'punishment', and what the Bible calls 'chastisement'. Chastisement is a form of punishment, though it's more clearly identified with coming from a place of love, and as a form of correction. Punishment by itself, however, is more commonly associated with a form of suffering for an offense, without the clear connection to love being the motivation.

The Bible tells us that "whom the Lord loves He chastens, and scourges every son whom He receives". (Hebrews 12:6) No punishment is enjoyable when one is receiving it, and we certainly want to avoid the 'wrath' of God. But we should also understand that some punishments from God really are a sign of His love, and for our own good. So we don't want to run away from all punishments, lest we run away from love.
