  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I know this question might be controversial, but I will ask it anyway, does being a Christian make you a better parent? I personally don't think so, there are good Christian parents, there are bad Christian parents, just as there are good and bad parents of any other faith and none! I just don't think faith has anything to do with your ability, or not, to be a good parent.

Lisa Whelchel, of the show Facts of Life has a wonderful perspective of mothering. She writes an article in every issue of Today's Christian Woman magazine and has several books on parenting. Her website is www.lisawhelchel.com, I think.

I don't have a specific website to suggest. However, I would like to address Tangnefedd's question. I agree that being a Christian does not necessarily make one a better parent. However, if the parents are sincere Christians it does offer things that nonChristian parents do not offer and the things that it offers are the most important things in this world. For example, Christian parents will make it a priority to show their children the way to salvation. I can not think of a more cruel thing to do to child than not prepare them for eternity. To take the risk of allowing one's child to spend an eternity in hell is worse than physically and mentally abusing a child (both of which are atrocious acts). That alone seems to me enough of a reason to raise a child in a Christian setting, but I think there are other reasons too. For example, if one raises a child based on the Bible, then the child will always have a reference point of good and evil, right and wrong, but in a nonChristian upbringing, good and evil, right and wrong is based on what works for that family or what works for that individual or what society deems as good and evil at the time or it is based other unGodly standards. I think just practically speaking a Christian upbringing is the best way. It teaches compassion and love, but also wisdom and how to avoid many problems and trouble in life and how to handle problems when we can't avoid them. So the parent himself may not be the best in the world based on his individual personality or parenting style, but the parenting method of Christianty is the best way.
