  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What's your favourite opening and why?

I like the King's Gambit. If accepted it shortens the game considerably, you can usually get to an endgame in 12-15 moves. Many players haven't seen it played or are not used to countering it. There are fewer moves to remember. The ferocity of the middle game often puts the black player on the defensive and they often feel like they are losing even if they aren't.

I play the CaroKann to avoid the King's Gambit

That's all I will say about my opening reperetoire. A magician never reveals his secrets, and neither does a Chess Master ;)

Haven't played in a while but used to play very regularly and be part of a club. Got private lessons from best player there for over a year as well. I like the queens gambit when playing white the best, I've seen that many amatuers don't expect it (kings gambit is standard) and don't know how to counter it well. If I'm black I usually go allong with kings gambit if they play it, or Spanish at times, really like playing spanish as black, it's not very easy but great fun, especially if your aponent doesn't know it :)

1.f4, isnt that the bird?

Yes, and it's also good for the birds too ;)

I played it as my main opening for White for a couple of years. It's hard to get past 1600 with a system that is so shallow and transparent.

We had quite a funny match last term, we have an inter college league in the university, and chess matches consist of two teams of 5, playing 5 boards.

I was on board 2 with white, and I played a h4 tromp. (1.d4 Nf6 2.Bg5 Ne4 3.h4), I looked to my left at board 3, where our guy was black, and he was playing the polish (1.d4 b5), I was quite amused by the two weird openings on our boards! ;)

I played a game a while back as White and my opponent used the f5 variation of the ruy lopez. (I know it's name but will burn up my computer should I try to spell it;) )

e4 e5
Nf3 Nc6
Bb5 f5

He was fine until he made that move. After about the 11th move I had captured his Knights, one Bishop, and four pawns. He had not taken one of my pieces.
Needless to say he resigned then and there.

4...d5 deserves a ???

If you're going to play a Schliemann (which is not a very good opening if White knows what he's doing), then at least learn the reply to 4.exf5... which is 4...e4.

White should never accept the gambit anyway. Simply 4.Nc3 or 4.d3 give White a small plus. Considering it's only move 4, a small plus is pretty good.

Blessings...
