Must say there are some awesome favourite hymns in here.
My personal fave is 'Jerusalem' though 'O God our help in ages past' is a close second. Wonderful thread.

I have not but I will check it out when I get home tonight. My favorite version is by jazz pianist Hank Jones. Its on his album "Steal Away" which is entirely classic hymns and spirituals.

My earliest memory of a jazz/soul version was the Ramsey Lewis one, quite popular with the 'Mods' over here in the sixties.
Eva Cassidy's version was a minor hit here too a few years back.

I always enjoy the martial sorts of hymns too, perhaps a hold-over from my army days.
