I enjoyed Firefly during it's short run on Fox.

That's not exactly obscure, just not well known amongst the- less refined- TV viewers. ;)

Best DVD boxed set I ever bought.

OTOH something like Space Rangers or Warlord Battle for the Galaxy (AKA the Osiris Chronicles) are obscure to the point of being totally unremembered/unknown.

Space Patrol (1963)

It was a marianette puppet series. It pre-dated The Thunderbirds by 2 years and one can see where The Thunderbirds got a lot of their ideas. It wasn't the slickets show ever made but I really enjoyed it when I was a kiddie. It was so futuristic and unbelieveable at the time I first saw it, in the late sixties. Man had not landed on the moon yet (well man still hasn't really landed on the moon yet either, as we all know that was faked for political purposes, but thats another story). I think if kids were to watch space patrol today it wouldn't have the same impact in this world of mobile phones, wireless internet and 24 hour supermarkets. However, I could still watch it today and get the same enjoyment, simply by casting my mind back to much simpler times, when we all lived in a much friendlier world. At the time it was the things dreams were made of.... Well, it was if you were a little boy who liked to dream of space travel and fantastic gadgets.

Bless Ya

I liked that series. It has been a long time since i have seen it during the original run. For series like that the Scifi Channel used to be pretty good about dredging up old series that never quite got off the ground.

Highway man was also a favorite. He had a cool semi/helicopter.

During one writers strike there were some good scifi shows. I guess they pulled stuff off of the rejected pilot pile and shoved them on air. It was about 88-89.

Also there was some stuff late at night during the late 80s and early 90s. Remember the one that had the toy(I want to say spaceship) you could play along with the screen. Aside from the obvious limitations of such a commercial type series it was not all bad.

There is one series I caught only once late at night, out of town. It was set in a future where there were mutants. And the only detail I remmeber for sure is that to "hook up" with some one you had to have appropriate genetics and people were given tokens or coins of a certain color so that the spread of some disease or another would be prevented. Only one character, who was not a normal human, had a black token.

One less known series here in the US is Red Dwarf. Quite funny scifi at times.

DR. WHO and his telephone booth time machine.

Running for 40 (ish?) years would hardly qualify Dr. Who as obscure, but as far as quality goes... well, good stories and good actors goes a long way in making up for cheesy special effects and sets.

As an aside, I read once that Tom Baker once wished to do a guest appearance on The Golden Girls. I wonder (would check IMDB, but I'm on dial-up) if he ever did.

Good choice Billnew.

I liked Dark Skies when it was on, but to be honest I was only able to catch five or so episodes in its original run. And as no one does reruns of the show (that I know of) and as I believe it is not availible on DVD, chances are that I'm not seeing the other episodes any time soon. Space: Above and Beyond is pretty much the same situation.
